The New York Yankees wasted a year of elite pitching by not showing up on offense in the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. In addition to a poor offensive showing, the Yankees played sloppy defense, which ultimately condemned their season.

After getting swept by the Rays in three games, there must be changes made to the Yankees this offseason, particularly in their lineup. One dream move they can make would be signing right fielder/DH Seiya Suzuki in free agency to bring in another productive right-handed power bat. So, we're going to project what this contract could look like for Suzuki and the Yankees, and if it's realistic.

What a Seiya Suzuki contract might look like

Suzuki is coming off another strong campaign, where he slashed .270/.368/.473 with a .841 OPS, 131 OPS+, 26 home runs, 86 RBI and a 5.1 bWAR in 143 games with the Chicago Cubs. A season after slugging 32 homers, driving in 103 RBI and posting a .804 OPS, Suzuki followed it up with a career year in 2026 in terms of WAR.

Now, he is set to receive a big payday in free agency this winter. According to spotrac, Suzuki, at age 32, is projected to receive a three-year, $106.52 million deal on the open market. This would pay Suzuki north of $35 million per season AAV. If this truly is the deal he will get, the Yankees should be all over him as their top free agent target.

This type of deal would be a bargain for Suzuki. The Yankees just re-signed Cody Bellinger last offseason to a five-year, $162.5 million deal, but he was entering his age 31 season, as opposed to Suzuki, who will be 33 next August. For that, acquiring Suzuki on a short-term contract would be a steal for the Yankees.

Is Suzuki realistic for the Yankees?

He most certainly is a realistic fit for New York. The Yankees desperately need more right-handed pop beyond Aaron Judge, and they can't count on DH Giancarlo Stanton anymore heading into the 2027 season. The Yankees could bring in Suzuki and move him to left field, bumping Bellinger over to center field.

Yes, Spencer Jones certainly emerged as a promising young player this past season. But the Yankees shouldn't rely on Jones to step up as an everyday outfielder next year. They should bring in Suzuki and have Jones force his way into the lineup if he produces enough.

The Yankees will already look like a different team next season with Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham likely departing in free agency. Signing Suzuki to a multi-year deal to become a fixture in their lineup would be a massive upgrade over two underachieving regular bats.

The Yankees' offense would be centered around Suzuki, Judge, Bellinger, Ben Rice and Luis Garcia Jr., which would make them instant World Series contenders, given their strong pitching staff. There needs to be change, and bringing in Suzuki to balance out their lineup would be a great start.
