There's an ongoing environmental crisis occurring north of the border in Canada and it's affecting Tuesday night's game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Yup, that's how enormous and concerning this is.

Multiple Canadian provinces are dealing with what's expected to be a record amount of wildfires in a single year for the country. And the risk is only expected to increase this month, which makes it all the more worrisome. This is all happening over 500 miles away.

On Tuesday, New York City was under an air quality alert due to the rapidly spreading smoke as Canada dealt with blankets of it in Toronto and Ontario. The fires are affecting the northern part of the US spanning from parts of Minnesota to Massachusetts.

It's fairly surprising there have been no delays for the Yankees-White Sox game given how this is what Yankee Stadium looks like right now. And New York's Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, had its game postponed.

Canadian wildfires continue to spread, Yankee Stadium impacted on Tuesday

Dystopian indeed. Much of these fires have been ignited by lightning with Canada suffering from hot and dry conditions, which are expected to persist in the coming months.

Here's the latest, per Reuters:

By Sunday, about 3.3 million hectares had already burned - about 13 times the 10-year average - and more 120,000 people had been at least temporarily forced from their homes.

There are currently 413 active wildfires, including 249 deemed out of control, and about 26,000 people are under evacuation orders across Canada.

New York City mayor Eric Adams advised those with heart or breathing issues to stay indoors with the exception of tending to "absolute necessities."

According to the New York Times, New York and Toronto were ranked among the top 10 cities in the world with the poorest air quality on Tuesday. They usually rank outside of the top 3,000. The air quality index in New York City right now is considered "unhealthy."

We always knew Aaron Hicks getting released would somehow turn the world upside down. But as of right now Clarke Schmidt has taken the mound and the game has begun.

Stay tuned for updates as the evening progresses, because we wouldn't be surprised if this one gets postponed or ends early.
