Yankees vs. Marlins prediction and odds for Sunday, August 13 (Future Cy Young)

The Yankees and Marlins have split the first two games of this weekend set and New York will lean on their ace in the rubber match.

Former Cy Young Award winner, Sandy Alcantara threw a complete game five-hitter yesterday to beat the New York Yankees. Today, the rubber match between the 60-57 Yankees and the 61-57 Miami Marlins could feature two pitchers who could someday join Alcantara as Cy Young Award winners.

Gerrit Cole could be on his way to his first Cy Young Award this season with his 10-3 record and 2.75 ERA in 24 starts. Eury Perez on the other hand will likely have to wait a bit longer to win the award, but at 20-years-old he’s already one of the best pitchers in baseball. Perez is 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 12 starts.

This is the most exciting pitching matchup today, so let’s get into the odds for the Yankees and Marlins in Miami.

Yankees vs. Marlins prediction and pick

It’s a bit of a stretch to be projecting a Cy Young Award for Perez, but he certainly has the stuff and the talent. Though lately it’s been a lot tougher for him to navigate MLB lineups. When he first arrived in the big leagues he must have thought it was easy with his 1.34 ERA through nine starts. Then he got shelled by Atlanta and missed some time. His last start he went 4.2 innings against the Reds and allowed four earned runs.

Gerrit Cole could very easily get his first Cy Young Award this year, but he’ll need to shake off his most recent start. He went seven innings and allowed four runs with just three strikeouts and two walks. His strikeout numbers are a bit down this year, but he’s having one of his best seasons despite that drop.

The Marlins are 8-17 over the last 30 days and are 29th in runs scored over that stretch. I don’t expect that to suddenly turn around against Cole. Even though I still have faith in Perez long term, he’s had some struggles lately, so I’m going to back the Yankees.
