Yankees vs. Angels prediction and odds for Tuesday, July 18 (How to bet total)

There could be value in betting on the total in Tuesday's Yankees vs. Angels matchup.

The New York Yankees lost again in extra innings on Monday night, and the team’s playoff chances are being tested in the process.

New York is just 3-7 in its last 10 games and is in last place in the AL East at this point in the season. Even after getting a solid outing from Luis Severino, the Yankees struggled against a poor starting pitcher again on Monday.

Tuesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels brings in yet another favorable pitching matchup with Domingo German (5-5, 4.32 ERA) taking on Patrick Sandoval (4-7, 4.41 ERA).

Sandoval, a lefty, has struggled with keeping people off the base paths this season, posting a 1.47 WHIP.

Here are the odds and my best bet for the Yankees-Angels matchup on Tuesday night:

Yankees vs. Angels prediction and pick

New York’s offense has been below average all season, but against left-handed pitching, the Yankees are slightly better in 2023.

They rank 13th in Major League Baseball in OPS despite playing a league-low 59 games against left-handers.

That’s bad news for Sandoval, who has really struggled since the start of June. The Angels lefty has posted a 6.23 ERA across six starts, allowing 41 hits and 14 walks in 30.1 innings of work. His FIP is just 3.48 over that stretch, but it’s hard to see him turning things around when he’s allowing so many baserunners.

While it may seem like the Yankees have the pitching advantage, I am worried about Germán against the power the Angels have in their lineup.

Los Angeles is No. 3 in the league in homers this season and No. 5 in OPS. Germán, even with his perfect game last month, has an ERA and FIP north of 4.00 and has allowed 16 homers in 17 starts.

The OVER didn’t come through in Monday’s game, but I’m going back to the well here given the pitching matchup.
