While the New York Yankees were busy finalizing the humungous trade that brought former San Diego Padres outfield superstar Juan Soto to the Bronx, the Los Angeles Dodgers were making their own seismic move, signing Shohei Ohtani to a preposterous 10-year, $700 million deal.

To accommodate both Ohtani and old Yankee nemesis Joe Kelly, who rejoined the Dodgers on a much cheaper deal, Andrew Friedman needed to ship some of his 40-man players away. The Yankees, in need of more depth in several areas, appear ready to oblige him.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Joel Sherman, the Yankees and Dodgers are progressing in talks that would send a pitcher at the end of LA's roster and a prospect back over to New York in exchange for one of the Yanks' prospects. Sherman confirmed this is a 2-for-1 deal.

With LA still currently packed to the gills with bullpen arms, it makes sense to part with one of their less heralded ones to make space for Kelly and Ohtani. With the Yankees' recent success in turning garden variety relievers into ace firemen, adding another project could appeal to Brian Cashman.

It remains unclear as to which prospect the Dodgers will part with. Considering this move is as much a logistical one to accommodate Ohtani as it is for competitive reasons, fans shouldn't necessarily expect one of the team's more impactful players to make the trip to the East Coast.

The Yankees have gone into full Evil Empire mode in the last few weeks, as they have emptied out their prospect cupboards to acquire top talent and remain at the front of the pack in the race to sign ace Japanese starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

However, with Soto secured and some noteworthy names coming to town from a very solid developmental pipeline in Chavez Ravine, Brian Cashman and the front office need to be heralded for their aggressiveness.
