Yankees promote Jasson Dominguez for Little League Classic, but fans will still be annoyed

Will he even be used?

Were you aware that Sunday's Yankees-Tigers showdown at Williamsport, tied to the Little League World Series festivities, required a 27th man for the affair? Well, it does! And the Yankees have borrowed one from close-by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Unfortunately, the method of his promotion means he'll be gone in the blink of an eyes -- if not sooner, somehow.

Jasson Dominguez has been promoted to the Yankees' roster for Sunday's game against Detroit, but he'll serve as the team's additional 27th man. No corresponding move. Nobody gets demoted. And, therefore, Dominguez will have to head right back down to Triple-A when this game concludes.

Will he make an impact on Sunday? Or will this be a Jorbit Vivas situation, where the Yankees pull off some fan service, only to bury the player everyone's excited for on the bench before sending him sliding back to the minors?

Making matters worse on Sunday, this game might be rained out entirely, limited Dominguez's potential impact window from nine innings down to zero.

Dominguez has found his rhythm in recent weeks, pulling his Triple-A numbers up to .280 with a .766 OPS after shaking off the rust resulting from an oblique injury and offseason Tommy John surgery. The Yankees would still very much like to retain his potential Rookie of the Year eligibility for next season, though, which could result in an additional high draft pick if he takes home the honor. For that reason, don't expect them to actively promote him until Sept. 1 at the earliest; Alex Verdugo will just have to make due until then.

As of now, it seems the game Sunday night will likely be played, but the start time could be pushed back. The contingency plan, of course, is flying both teams back to Detroit so they can play on the off day tomorrow ... when Tigers ace/likely Cy Young Tarik Skubal will be on the mound.

Better to get the game in Sunday night, keep the off day, and maybe deploy Dominguez in a big spot.
