Yankees DFA cleanup hitter to add Jazz Chisholm to active roster
Apparently, the Yankees' cleanup hitter for a crucial Subway Series matchup also represented the literal last guy on the roster. Is that good?
Ahead of Sunday night's finale at Fenway Park, the Yankees managed to activate Saturday deadline addition Jazz Chisholm. Aaron Boone expressed some trepidation late Saturday night about Chisholm being able to make his Yankee debut prior to Monday, but somehow the team figured out air travel, and he'll be batting fifth and playing center field. No pressure, sir.
On the flip side of Sunday night's activation was JD Davis, who was DFA'd after being placed on the IL while suffering from the flu just before the All-Star break.
Davis will end his Yankees career with 22 plate appearances in seven total games across more than a month with the team. He recorded two hits, highlighted by one electric double in a Friday night Yankees rally in Toronto on June 28. His final OPS+ with the team was 12, 88% worse than a league-average ballplayer.
Yankees DFA JD Davis, add Jazz Chisholm to active roster before Red Sox finale at Fenway Park
This may be a bold declaration, but Chisholm will have to improve upon that number for this move to be judged a success.
Ultimately, the Yankees prized Chisholm's versatility; he'll likely start at second and in center field with the Bombers, while Gleyber Torres might move to third, or might move out of town. Davis, on the other hand, was imported during a time of desperation, and was meant to mash left-handers.
Admittedly, that's something this current Yankees roster doesn't do very often; the Mets rejiggered their rotation twice to line up middling lefty starters to face the Yanks, and it resulted in their first full-season Subway Series sweep since 2013.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be something Davis does anymore, either. Now, the Yankees' cleanup hitter from less than a week ago is seeking his fourth team of the 2024 MLB season.
