It's time to beef up the prospect pool.

The New York Yankees will begin their quest to add to their prospect pool on Sunday night, when the MLB Draft takes center stage on All-Star weekend. According to ESPN's Kiley McDaniel, Brian Cashman and Co. are choosing from a wide swath of talent at the moment, and might not know their preferred selection until moments before, based on how the draft order shakes out. Exciting! Scary!

If you're a prospect head hoping for a Yankees reload, here are our keys to watching this year's draft.

2024 MLB Draft: How to watch the MLB Draft (TV and Streaming), Draft Schedule

The full draft schedule can be found here, as the Texas Rangers doll up downtown Arlington to put elite college and high school athletes on the big stage. Several of the game's soon-to-be prominent youngsters are scheduled to attend, and will react live to their life-changing selection. If you prefer watching them freak out with their families at home, there'll be a good deal of that too, though.

How to watch the 2024 MLB Draft

  • TV: Rounds 1-2 on ESPN, MLB Network, MLB.TV, Rounds 3-20 only on MLB.TV
  • Streaming: MLB.TV, MLB.com, MLB App

Tuning in at 6 PM EST on Sunday on either MLB Network or ESPN will get you your fill of pre-draft hype and analysis, and things should move at a relatively even pace for the remainder of the evening. All MLB teams will have wrapped up their final pre-All-Star contests around the top of the show, unless the Braves and Padres play a cursed four-hour game, which I've just put out into the universe by accident. The Yankees will be long done with the Orioles, a game that begins at (???) 11:35 AM EST.

Yankees 2024 MLB Draft Position and Bonus Pool

Despite the Yankees' worst season in decades, their top selection was pushed all the way down 10 spots from 16th to 26th because of how blatantly they surpassed the CBA's spending limits. Frankly, that's awesome. What a nice reward for moribund play. Remember those brief few minutes when fans mistakenly believed they'd hit the lottery jackpot? Pfffff. The loudest, longest sigh you've ever heard.

As for this year's bonus pool, the Yankees have $8,134,500 in place if they need to go overslot to woo top talent away from commitments in later rounds, or shower their top picks with extravagant deals to sway they away from college. That's the seventh-lowest total in MLB.

Somehow, the best team in the AL Central through the season's first half also won last winter's MLB Draft lottery. Sigh. At least it wasn't Boston.

The Yankees will pick towards the bottom, as they always do, but not for the reasons they usually do. Ideally, we'll see them again down here next year, but because of late-season dominance rather than financial malfeasance and mediocrity.
