It looks like the apocalypse in New York City right now because of the smoke from the Canadian wildfires and it was so bad that the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox couldn’t play yesterday and now have a doubleheader in the Bronx today. Heading into Game 1 the Yankees are 36-26 and in third place in the AL East, eight full games back of the Rays. The White Sox have won four straight and are 27-35, but only four games behind the Twins for first place in the Central.

For the first of two today the Yanks will hand the ball to Luis Severino who got shelled last time out and is 0-1 with a 5.28 ERA in three starts this year. The White Sox will go with 4-6 Lance Lynn who also struggled in his most recent appearance and has a 6.55 ERA.

Despite two former aces coming off shaky outings there is still a low total in Game 1 to go along with the low amount of oxygen in the air. Let’s check out the odds and see if there’s value in the Bronx today.

White Sox vs. Yankees prediction and pick

Vegas is smart and what they rarely ever do is overreact. So, that’s why they aren’t freaking out about Severino and Lynn giving up a combined 15 runs in each of their last starts. Severino allowed seven on nine hits against the Dodgers, but that was when LA was red hot and was only his third start of the season. Prior to that outing, he had a very solid start against the Padres who have a stacked lineup as well.

Lynn gave up eight also in four innings on eight hits to the Angels and while he hasn’t been good this year his FIP is over a full run lower than his ERA and that typically means positive results are on the horizon.

Over the past week, the Yankees are 22nd in OPS and 21st in runs with 16 despite hitting nine home runs during that stretch. They are without Aaron Judge who has been worth 2.8 games of oWAR this year and is responsible for basically all of their offense. Well, with a little help from Anthony Rizzo. I don’t think the Yankees will be able to score much and Severino and Lynn will both bounce back. That’s a recipe for an under in the Bronx.
