Rays vs. Yankees prediction and odds for Sunday, May 14 (Back New York at home)
The New York Yankees finish a competitive weekend series against the Rays on Sunday afternoon and the Bronx Bombers are starting to look the part.
The Yankees have been red hot at the plate since Aaron Judge returned from a hip injury and the team will hope that Clark Schmidt can put together a quality start after struggling through the early portion of the season. The Rays have been the best team in baseball thus far, but are they starting to slow down after a historic beginning to 2023?
Let's check out the odds for this series finale:
Yankees vs. Rays odds, run line and total
Yankees vs. Rays prediction and pick
Over the last week, the Yankees have had the best lineup in baseball. The team is slugging over .500, the only team in baseball with that mark and is second in wRC+, which quantifies the run scoring chances the team is creating.
While the Rays are tops in most hitting statistics over the balance of the season, it's starting to slow down, hitting for less power over the past week with the ninth highest slugging percentage.
The Rays will hope that Zach Eflin can slow down the Yankees hot bats on Sunday, and while his numbers look good on the surface, he has been privy to allowing the long ball often in his career, and no team is putting the barrel on the ball like the Yankees over the past week, hitting 17 home runs over the last seven games.
While Clarke Schmidt has an ERA of 5.35, the Rays bats are starting to generate less power than early in the year, which has been the Yankees' starters biggest issue (eight homers allowed in eight innings). I think this is a good time to back Schmidt.
I'm going to buy low on the Yankees to keep it rolling and cap off the series with the Rays in winning fashion.
