The New York Yankees have raced out to a 9-2 start to the season, returning home on Friday after nightmare matchups with the Astros and Diamondbacks (which went well). They'll now go for a series win over the spiraling Miami Marlins on Tuesday night, who are doubtlessly hungry to turn around their 1-10 record (and have too much talent not to do some semblance of damage).
Manager Skip Schumaker might not be sticking around next season, but he's here in the meantime, and he certainly doesn't want to look bad ahead of his unexpected upcoming free agency.
Probable starting pitchers
- Carlos Rodón will take the mound for the Yankees, looking to provide a bit more length after taking impressive steps forward in his first two road outings (2.79 ERA, 9 2/3 innings). Then again, in the wake of Nestor Cortes Jr.'s spectacular eight-inning shutout, the Yankees bullpen is as rested as its been all year. The WHIP remains a concern for Rodón (1.759), but the stuff has certainly returned one year removed from back/forearm issues. Now, it's about harnessing the command consistently.
- Rodón will be opposed by Marlins left-hander AJ Puk. A menace out of the bullpen last season, Miami is trying to turn back the clock and reintroduce the one-time A's top pitching prospect to rotation work. This experiment has become necessary following injuries to Edward Cabrera, Eury Perez, and Sandy Alcantara. Puk has begun the season with a 9.00 ERA and 2.833 WHIP in six innings (across two starts) after striking out 78 in 56 2/3 innings with a 3.97 ERA last year as a relief ace.
