MLB's mock trade deadline blockbuster for Yankees would be huge after Jazz Chisholm

This would be pretty cool.

On Saturday, the New York Yankees made arguably the move of the trade deadline news cycle so far when they acquired Jazz Chisholm from the Miami Marlins in exchange for three prospects, including catcher Agustin Ramirez.

Though it has some flair to it because Jazz's name is attached, there's still much to be done in terms of fixing this roster before July 30 at 6 p.m. ET. The Yankees still need a third baseman, pitching, and then whatever else in terms of general "talent" that might fall into their lap. On top of that, one of Gleyber Torres or Alex Verdugo needs to go, unless someone is willing to take on a backup role or change positions entirely (Gleyber to third base?).

That has no effect on the Yankees' third base situation, though, which needs an upgrade arguably more than anything right now. The platoon of DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza cannot continue, and they need to figure out a first base situation as Ben Rice becomes more and more unplayable by the day.

Just hours before the Chisholm trade went down, MLB.com might've been onto something. They proposed a deal that saw the Yankees acquire infielder Ryan McMahon and catcher Elias Diaz from the Colorado Rockies (even though reports have suggested they aren't intent on moving McMahon).

That would be something to get fans to officially buy in on the team's 2024 chances. McMahon taking over at third and Diaz providing superior backup catcher reps behind Austin Wells could change a lot for the Yankees.

Yankees Rumors: Ryan McMahon, Elias Diaz deemed as trade fits for New York by MLB.com

McMahon would be a legitimate all-around addition. The veteran can play first, second or third base (mostly third) and has been right around a league-average hitter with some pop and an ability to get on base. The value would be his sure-handed defense and the fact he'd be surrounded by an actual lineup, which would boost his offensive abilities. He's also a lefty with a 37% pull rate (same as Chisholm).

Then there's Diaz, who can hit for contact as a catcher and is coming off a 2023 All-Star Game appearance. He's another league-average bat with above-average defense, which would sprinkle in upgrades across the Yankees roster. Jose Trevino was fine before he went down with an injury, but he's expected to miss a lot of time and was unable to hit lefties (whereas Diaz bats .275 against them this year).

As we'll state for the 100th time: all the Yankees need are competent, near league-average hitters around Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton. Instead, every other hitter has largely been a trainwreck for these last two months, and the offense has exposed this team for the third year in a row now. This is the last stand. The team can be saved by the proper trade deadline additions, and this MLB.com pitch is a way to heal the ailing offense.
