The Yankees and Giants have split the opening series of each team's 2023 season, who will win the rubber match?
The Bronx Bombers took care of business on Opening Day with a 5-0 shutout win, but the Giants got the better of the home team on Saturday, winning 7-5. The Yanks will turn to rookie Jhony Brito for his first start, can he show up against a Giants team off a strong hitting performance?
Let's check out the odds and make a bet on this Sunday afternoon rubber match:
Giants vs. Yankees odds, run line and total
Giants vs. Yankees prediction and pick
Brito was lights out in the minors last season, posting a 2.96 ERA across 112.2 innings last season. He also looked the part of a rotation arm in Spring Training, albeit a much smaller sample, allowing three earned runs in 13 innings.
Now, he's got his chance in the big leagues, but will Aaron Boone let him loose for a full work load? That's to be determined but would be massive for the Yanks after the bullpen had to pitch 5 1/3 innings on Saturday.
However, considering it's Brito's first start, I don't expect a quality start given its his first start at this level. Not to mention it's not going to be an easy matchup, the Giants offense was able to tally 12 hits and I fancy its chances of plating runs against a potentially tired Yankees pitching staff on Sunday.
However, New York should be in good shape at the plate as well against Ross Stripling. The former Jays pitcher has faced the Yankees a ton, he has allowed 14 earned runs in 27 2/3 innings across seven appearances. New York, despite splitting the two games, has scored five runs in each game as the offense looks in midseason form already.
Given that I have concerns about Brito's ability to go long in the game and the Stripling's struggles against the Yankees, I'll go with the over on Sunday afternoon.
