Giants sign former Yankees reliever who ended up being wasted trade acquisition

Remember this?!

Back in February, the New York Yankees conducted some light business with the Milwaukee Brewers after shipping Jake Bauers to them in November. This time, the Bombers were looking for some pitching help.

They acquired Clayton Andrews in a trade with the Brew Crew. Remember him? He appeared in 1/3 of an inning for the Yankees a couple months ago to just about the most possible outrage a singular fanbase could have over a player as anonymous as Clayton Andrews.

Well, no need to worry anymore, Yankees fans. After he was designated for assignment a few weeks ago, Andrews just signed a minor-league contract with the San Francisco Giants. And he got off to a terrible start, surrendering four earned runs on two hits and two walks in 1/3 of an inning in the organization's Rookie League.

In the end, the Yankees sent 19-year-old prospect pitcher Joshua Quezada to the Brewers for Andrews, who gave New York 1/3 of an inning in the bigs and 24 2/3 frames of 5.84 ERA ball at Triple-A.

Yankees News: Former pitcher Clayton Andrews signs with Giants and gets rocked

Andrews, who was called up for a day with the Yankees back on May 21, entered a game against the Seattle Mariners in the top of the eighth inning. What was the relevance? The Yankees were down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but a three-run Gleyber Torres homer got them right back in it.

All they had to do was keep the M's in check ... which is why everyone scratched their head when Andrews took the mound. He had four MLB games under his belt and had sniffed no action with the Yankees yet. Aaron Boone had other options in the bullpen to turn to.

Instead, Andrews served up a 92 MPH fastball right over the middle to Luke Raley, who deposited the offering over the short porch to give Seattle a 5-3 lead and the eventual win. After the game, Boone said he "liked the lane" for Andrews, who was removed after walking another batter and recording an out.

Like so many other questionable roster decisions this season (Dennis Santana existing, JD Davis arriving, and the lack of effort to build depth), Andrews represents how wasteful Brian Cashman and the front office can be.

They have a few weeks to make up for it with the trade deadline almost here. Please find more ways to not have guys like Clayton Andrews pitching meaningful innings, no matter the time of year.
