The Yankees and Blue Jays have played to a draw through two games, so Sunday's matchup will prove to be the rubber match between the two AL East foes.
The Yankees will hope that Clarke Schmidt can find his footing from last season after a poor start to the year, when he looked like a future rotation piece for New York, but he will have his hands full with an emerging Blue Jays lineup. However, New York will hope to hand Kevin Gausman another poor start after he allowed seven earned runs in the first inning against the Astros.
How should we bet this Sunday matchup? Here are the odds and my look at the over/under:
Blue Jays vs. Yankees odds, run line and total
Blue Jays vs. Yankees prediction and pick
It's been a tough go for Schmidt so far. In four starts he has an ERA of 8.79 and while his FIP is far lower, it's still a brutal mark at 6.01. He is struggling to avoid hard contact with more than 13 hits allowed per nine innings and this is an elite Blue Jays lineup that is top 10 in wRC+, batting average and on-base percentage.
However, the Yankees should be able to tee off on Gausman, who has allowed two home runs in each of his past two starts. New York isn't hitting all that well, but when they do it's for power. The team is hitting just .229 on the year, but the team is above league average in slugging percentage and fifth in home runs. If they can make contact, I think the Bronx Bombers should be in position to score.
I can't trust Schmidt to keep runs to a minimum, but I like the matchup for both offenses to put up runs, so I'll side with the over as my favorite bet.
