The New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics are both in last place in their respective divisions, but New York is at least over .500 this season.

The Yankees’ offense got going on Monday night, scoring seven runs in a 7-2 win over the eight-win A’s. Oakland comes into this game with a league-worst -129 run differential.

New York will send Clarke Schmidt (0-3, 5.83 ERA) to the mound in this game against Drew Rucinski (0-2, 7.71 ERA). The Yankees are just 2-5 in Schmidt’s seven starts this season, but they are -240 favorites in this game.

Can bettors back the Yankees to beat the lowly A’s again? Here’s a look at the latest odds:

Athletics vs. Yankees odds, run line and total

Athletics vs. Yankees prediction and pick

I can’t back the Yankees at this price with Schmidt on the mound, especially since New York is just 19th in OPS and 23rd in runs scored this season.

Oakland is the worst team in baseball, but I think there is more value in betting on the OVER in this game than anything.

Rucinski has been awful this season, allowing 15 hits and six walks in 9.1 innings across two starts. The 34-year-old probably shouldn’t be starting for a Major League team, but the A’s aren’t looking to win anyway.

New York was able to score seven runs on Monday, and the 7-2 finish would have pushed this game over today’s total.

Schmidt has allowed at least two runs in each of his starts this season, allowing 41 hits and nine walks in just 29.1 innings of work.

Even though the Yankees have one of the best bullpen ERAs in baseball, I can’t ask them to completely shut down Oakland if Schmidt struggles again.

Go OVER in this Tuesday night showdown.
