Possible Trent Grisham injury would avoid Yankees' Anthony Volpe roster conundrum

We don't prefer it, but an IL stint makes the roster maneuvering a bit easier.

Trent Grisham departed Wednesday night's loss to the Blue Jays in the fourth inning. In his previous at-bat, he appeared to injure himself running the bases, and the Yankees didn't want to take any further chances.

After Grisham was removed, it was revealed shortly after he would undergo imaging on his knee on Thursday. That means we can assume he'll be out of the lineup for the series finale against Toronto.

Grisham told reporters after the game that he's not concerned about it being a long-term issue, but we all know how that goes. Fans appreciate the optimism, but nobody is going to care until there's a real medical opinion involved.

We'll be waiting for an update on Grisham's left knee as the day progresses, but this also opens up another discussion about the Yankees' roster.

If Trent Grisham hits the IL, the Yankees are saved an Anthony Volpe decision

As it stands, Jose Caballero is expected back on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays. He's been on the injured list with a finger injury. Many were wondering what the corresponding roster move would be.

Anthony Volpe? He was the replacement for Caballero, so another swap would've made the most sense, but the young shortstop has actually been playing well for the most part. Outside of a couple of defensive gaffes, he's been good with the glove, and he's hitting .250 with a .794 OPS. It's a small sample size, but it's night and day compared to what Volpe's produced since becoming a full-time player in 2023.

The other options were Max Schuemann and Spencer Jones. Schuemann's been rock solid in his utility role while Jones has been particularly ineffective since coming up for the Brewers series. So you can see how complicated this was about to get. Stick with the steady hand? Give the young guys a bit more runway? Reward good play?

That conversation should still be ongoing because we don't know Grisham's status, but if he goes on the shelf then it will be a simple swap with Caballero, and everybody here lives to see another day.

If not, and Grisham returns? Joel Sherman speculated that Volpe will be sent back to Triple-A to start playing more positions in an effort to make him more versatile for the MLB roster. Sherman was right about the Volpe option the first time around and we doubted him, so we'll take his word for it this time.

Either way, everybody should know their fate within the next 36 hours before the weekend series vs the Rays kicks off.
