Of course Gleyber Torres will miss Tigers' first series against Yankees next week

To be fair, we tried to warn Detroit Tigers fans about The Gleyber Torres Experience. While he's a solid player, the lows always overshadow the highs, and the inexplicable moments that accompany him are impossible to comprehend. The New York Yankees dealt with it for seven years.

It only took two games for the Tigers to learn the hard way. After some unathletic plays on defense in the opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Torres promptly suffered an injury on Friday night (the second game of 2025).

And it came as he hit a home run at Dodger Stadium. To be clear, Yankees fans shouldn't be laughing at this. It's an awful turn of events for Torres, who was looking for a change of scenery and hoping to rebuild his value as he hit free agency again in 2026.

But it is "more of the same" when it comes to the 28-year-old slugger, who couldn't help but take shots at his former team multiple times this offseason. Focus has typically been an issue with him, and "untimeliness" was largely his middle name with the Yankees.

Torres was officially placed on the injured list on Monday, which is the first time he's landed there since 2021. The Tigers, at the very least, were looking to get durability out of the second baseman, who only missed 36 games over the last three years. Now, it's possible he misses that many alone in 2025, depending on the severity of the oblique injury.

Former Yankees All-Star Gleyber Torres hits injured list after second game with Tigers

This, of course, knocks Torres out for next week's series against the Yankees in Detroit. No kidding. Is anybody surprised? At the very least, this was a road series for the Yanks, so the full "reunion" experience wouldn't have been on full display. That'll be from Sept. 9-11 when the Tigers visit the Bronx for a three-game set.

Torres should be fully healed up and ready to go by then, as all eyes will be on his return to Yankee Stadium after all that's happened since 2020. From spatting with the front office, to protesting about his defensive position, to him melting down over trade rumors, to various mental gaffes, to bizarre ups and downs after his first two All-Star campaigns, this chapter of Yankees history needed to end.

Yankees fans, however, had this series in Detroit circled because of all the offseason drama that persisted after Brian Cashman revealed on a random episode of Yankees Hot Stove that Torres refused to switch positions to accomodate Jazz Chisholm at the trade deadline. That prompted excessive commentary from Torres, who clearly couldn't let it go, which was hopefully going to make for a spicy storyline when these two teams met early in 2025.

But in classic fashion, much like Torres' tenure in New York, the buildup was for nothing, and we'll have to wait five months to see if it'll even be worth it anymore.
