News and notes from yet another off day

Nobody likes when their team doesn’t have a game scheduled, but two off days in the span of four days is maddening. I don’t know what to do with myself. Sure there’s other games to watch, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a Yankee game.

Anyway, here’s some news and notes regarding the team:

• Phil Hughes threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday and said he “felt good.” He admitted that he won’t know if he’s completely back until he gets into a game. He is set to take Thursday off and play some long toss on Friday in Baltimore. However, there’s no timetable for his first rehab start.
• Frankie Cervelli made a DH appearance in extended spring training and was hit in the forearm by a pitch. He’s fine though and is set to begin a rehab assignment today with high-A Tampa.
• From the “this should shock nobody” dept., Mark Prior was sent to the seven-day DL on Wednesday. The good news is that it has nothing to do with his arm, it’s just a “minor” groin injury and he’s not expected to miss much time.
• From the “let’s build a rumor” dept., Joel Sherman slanders Phil Hughes’ work ethic. The article contains the sentences “Hughes, for a young guy, is more doughy than chiseled.” and “…but clearly Hughes needs to become more diligent year-round in taking care of himself.” so read it at your own risk.
• The Yanks are apparently getting sued by some broad from Yonkers who claims her uncle created the team’s top hat logo but never got paid for it. Good luck with that, lady.
• Bud Selig says MLB is moving “inexorably” toward expanding the playoffs from eight teams to 10. I think this is a stupid idea because the season is long enough and adding another round to the playoffs wouldn’t work due to the inclement weather in November. Then again, I said the same thing about the Wild Card expansion in 1995 so what the hell do I know?
