Because the discourse never dies (viva la discourse!), three entirely unrelated incidents were swirled together in a petri dish on Wednesday night in an attempt to prove that Yankees fans are uniquely moronic. The Jeffrey Maier Home Run in the 1996 World Series, the two goons grabbing and twisting Mookie Betts' wrist in 2024, and Anthony Volpe's clearly interference-aided game-tying dinger were all fused together in a disingenuous lab, three incidents across 30 years meant to convey that all Yankee fans are as foolish as the lowest-common denominator.
Of course, the Maier home run benefitted the Yankees tremendously, explaining why said fans might not have learned the right lesson from it, but that's neither here nor there.
But defending the fanbase, even against disingenuous attacks, becomes impossible when you're able to zero in on just how stupidly these particular fans behaved, and just how much pride they took in destroying the rulebook (before getting caught in 4k).
While crossing the threshold and blindly grabbing for an in-play baseball isn't a Yankee-fan-specific issue - the most famous man to ever do this, Steve Bartman, did not bleed pinstripes! - it is the dumbest thing you can do at a ballgame outside of streaking, and it's certainly the dumbest thing to celebrate like you've accomplished something.
The baseball gods tested Yankees fans.

Was the Volpe ball going to hit the top of the wall and go over? Probably not. But we'll never know for sure, all because of these guys! Look at them bounce up and down, turning the fanbase into a punching bag once again.
Before this moment, rival fans probably would've taken aim at the Yankees' disappearing superstars and called it a day. Now, because of you, they're coming for us sitting at home specifically. Thanks, buds!
Yankees fans taunt Rays' Victor Mesa Jr. after interfering with Anthony Volpe ball
Oh, and they're roasting us because of this, too. The entire section sitting behind Victor Mesa Jr. threw garbage on the field, hurled insults at him, and started a "F*** You!" chant (innocent fun, but accomplishing nothing), all while the man himself smiled and asked for more.
God, does the Yankees roster ever need more dudes who would smile and ask for more.

What started off so promisingly - an ALDS battle between scrappy titans from Tampa and the proud Yankees, coming off a collective 18-2 bludgeoning of the Red Sox - turned into a heaping pile of trash once again, with boorish fans hucking garbage onto the field and a perp walk through the stadium.

Tensions and frustrations are boiling over as the Yankees' drought spirals to 17 years and they remain the online center of ridicule. While fans reflexively reaching for baseballs isn't a Yankees-specific problem, the more lost series that end up with scenes like this, the more you prove the people who paint Yankee fans with a broad brush correct.
