MLB fans need to get over themselves with Yankees-Mookie Betts incident after ban

Are New York Yankees fans "the worst" in sports? It's definitely a topic of conversation! But let's not forget about every other unruly fan situation that's ever happened not involving the New York Yankees.

Hey, why don't we rewind to ... the NLDS! A few weeks ago! When a game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres had to be stopped because Dodgers fans threw baseballs and trash onto the field at both Jurickson Profar and Fernando Tatis Jr.! Did we forget about that already?

Are we giving the two Yankees fans from Tuesday night a pass for forcefully grabbing Mookie Betts' glove and wrist to try and dislodge a ball that he caught? Absolutely not! Heinous behavior, even if it is a bit funny in the aftermath knowing nobody got hurt. We can laugh a little while not condoning the actions.

But can rival/holier-than-thou fans just ... give it a break already? Everybody was enraged when it was initially discovered the Yankees would not be banning those season ticket holders for Game 5 after they were escorted out of the building in the first inning of Game 4 (even though the only corroborating source for the non-ban was ... the offending fan himself). Then MLB stepped in and the Yankees refunded the fans' tickets and everyone was on their merry way.

Though there's something to be said about responding to those out there who are acting as if interfering with a player on the field should be taken lightly, everyone now zeroing in on Yankees fans as the premier perpetrators of anything that's ever gone wrong at a public sporting event is just a tired act.

The lowest hanging fruit possible. Post your GIFs of random drunken Yankees fans cheering on their team, do it! We'd look for GIFs of your fans doing the same, but there aren't any since there's a high likelihood your team doesn't regularly play in October.

On behalf of the New York Yankees, we are truly sorry the organization didn't act expeditiously to keep two nameless 40-something-year-olds barred from the rest of the World Series because of this. We'll just request MLB retroactively has the Dodgers ban everybody who was caught throwing objects at major league players earlier this month.

Oh, and this too. Anyone going to call out New England Patriots fans here? Anyone?

Nope, that's Boston! The scrappy underdogs! Not the fanbase with far too many accusations of racist acts! Definitely not the fanbase that breaks out in "Yankees Suck!" chants when they aren't even playing the Yankees. Those are the good guys.

How about a Dodgers fan Instagram account with over 200K followers making fun of a little kid who can't spell? Gold star for that one!

Moral of the story? Fandom is toxic, whether you're a rabid Yankees fan or a Columbus Crew fan. The only difference is that the Yankees' success magnifies every moment to further a one-sided narrative packed with preconceived notions seeking justification. Stop pretending to be a gatekeeper over what's appropriate and what's not, and what deserves greater punishment and what doesn't.

Don't let the Yankees win Game 5, that's all we'll say.
