The best part of this time of year is the leftovers. You feast, and you feast, saving some aside for the days to come. Inevitably, a container gets pushed to the back of the fridge, going untouched and spoiling until you finally get a chance to clean things out. The New York Mets can't help themselves from pawing over the New York Yankees' spoiled leftovers.
Little brother couldn't help but pick up former Yankees bust Anderson Severino just a few days ago, and now they're back at it again, this time going after a guy you probably forgot was a Yankee in Nick Burdi.
The Yankee-obsessed Mets can't stop going after retread arms from the Bronx
It wasn't all that long ago that Nick Burdi joined the Yankees. Signed as a flyer in December of 2023, Burdi was a former second-round pick of the Minnesota Twins. Burdi was a big-armed relief prospect whose spotty control limited his big league opportunities.
Prior to joining the Yankees, Burdi spent three years with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then a year with the Chicago Cubs, never pitching more than 8 2/3 innings in a single season.
Burdi's Yankees stat line is one of the more bizarre you'll see. He appeared in 12 games and pitched a career-high 9 1/3 innings. In that time, he posted a 1.86 ERA on the strength of 11.17 K/9. Unhittable is one word, and it does define what Burdi did, giving up just five hits in those nine innings of work. However, he also walked the world, posting an 8.38 BB/9. It's hard to get a hit when the pitcher keeps giving you a free pass.
Burdi's time with the Yankees was cut short due to a hip injury, and he was ultimately DFA'd. Last offseason, he joined the Boston Red Sox because, of course, he did. If anyone likes to swipe fringe Yankees pitchers more than the Mets, it's the Red Sox.
Burdi tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings for Boston this year, but saw his fastball velocity dip from 98 miles per hour to a tick below 95.
Now he's on to the Mets, where he'll likely compete to be a depth arm and nothing more. At the rate David Stearns is going, his Triple-A shuttle is going to be full of guys who flamed out in pinstripes. The obsession is truly baffling.
