Luis Gil showed exactly what Yankees desperately needed as he carved up Red Sox

Is 2024 Gil re-emerging?!

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil dominated the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, tallying six strikeouts and allowing just two hits across three scoreless innings of spring training work.

It was a showing from the 27-year-old that made the New York media second guess its pessimism about Gil, if only for a moment.

Aaron Boone and the rest of the Yankees' staff had to be pleased with Gil's velocity, which had an average of 95.7 mph for the day and topped out at 97.9. Velo was a negative talking point about Gil in 2025, wherein he averaged 95.2 mph on his fastball, a decline from 96.6 the year prior.

In fanning former Yankee Carlos Narváez on Wednesday, Gil touched north of 97 on back-to-back heaters. Is 2026 Luis Gil about to return to 2024 form? If so, it would come at a much-needed time for the Yankees and their half-healthy starting rotation.

Luis Gil's velocity and mojo are returning at a time of need for Yankees

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner recently called this spring a "pivotal" period for Gil. That assessment could be interpreted as a statement about Gil's own career, or a reminder of how badly the Yankees need him to be good to start the 2026 season.

With Gerritt Cole and Carlos Rodón out of the picture until later in the campaign, Max Fried is the only arm in New York's rotation with a track record of sustained excellence.

To avoid a tumbling start to the season in a wildly competitive American League East, the Yankees will need at least two of Cam Schlittler, Ryan Weathers, Will Warren, and Gil to deliver. Schlittler, by the way, is running a bit behind schedule due to back soreness, adding more importance to Gil's readiness.

Gil's outing on Wednesday felt all the sweeter because of the above. If he can "dominate like aces dominate" (Boone's words, not ours), the Yankees' rotation concerns will fade into the background. It's worth noting that Weathers looks locked and loaded for April, too.

Of course, the questions surrounding Gil haven't been answered with three spring training innings. If he's been undervalued by Yankees fans and media, it hasn't been due to Gil lacking moments of brilliance; it's that we haven't seen Gil stack those moments over a collection of outings since his dazzling rookie stretch.

His command still tends to fall by the wayside here and there, and likely always will. The Yankees don't need Gil to be Greg Maddux. The best version of Luis Gil (or something close) will suffice, and the velo indicates he might be re-emerging at the perfect time.
