Jon Heyman's scathing Devin Williams report relieves Yankees but reveals same issue

Unfortunately, this isn't surprising.

You have to wonder when the New York Yankees will learn their lesson. The franchise plays under a microscope like no other, with the fans expecting a championship or bust, even if the younger generation of Steinbrenner ownership has moved away from a focus on rings and instead holds the wallet in the highest regard.

Ownership may have pivoted away from that sort of mentality, but it's still prevalent in all other corners of the city that never sleeps. The media and the fans are relentless; this is nothing new. However, it seems the Yankees front office, time and time again, refuses to learn an all-important lesson.

There are plenty of talented players scattered throughout the majors who simply can't handle the New York limelight. We've seen it with Javier Vazquez, Sonny Gray, and countless others. It's a fair question to wonder when they'll finally start doing their due diligence to make sure a potential acquisition is a personality fit.

Devin Williams seems like the latest in the long line of New York flameouts, and a scathing new report from the New York Post's Jon Heyman just confirms that Williams was always doomed to fail here.

Jon Heyman's new report makes it clear that Devin Williams isn't cut out for New York, relieving the Yankees and terrifying the Mets

According to Heyman, the Yankees are relieved that Williams is gone. That shouldn't be a surprise, given his childish social media outburst directed at Yankees fans after his deal with the New York Mets became official.

Newsflash, Devin, everyone wanted to root for you, but you kept laying eggs.

Per Heyman, Williams' bombing in the Bronx surprised no one with the Brewers, as many in that organization said, "they knew New York wasn’t the right place for him." Unfortunately, he's still there, just donning different colors.

Take it for what it's worth, but Chicago radio host Bruce Levine reported that Williams didn't really want to go to the Mets; they just happened to offer him the most money. That just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

The Mets are in freefall right now, trading away a positive clubhouse presence and fan favorite in Brandon Nimmo, losing a fixture in Pete Alonso, and substantially downgrading from Edwin Diaz to Williams.

Don't think for a second that Mets fans and their beat reporters aren't going to be comparing every Williams' outing to what Diaz is doing all through 2026. It's rare that one finds themselves with more pressure on their shoulders as a Met than as a Yankee, but after giving Juan Soto a record-breaking contract, missing the playoffs, reported clubhouse conflicts, and a head-scratching winter, the Mets will be under an even greater microscope moving forward.

The Yankees are relieved to be free of this headache. They didn't extend any sort of offer to Williams. They wanted him gone, no matter what. Now, they can laugh at their little brother's misfortune, but they shouldn't get carried away.

The question is, when will Brian Cashman and the Yankees' brass finally learn their lesson? When will they stop ignoring personality red flags? When will they ensure that, in addition to talent, the players they're adding are a culture fit and not just a roster fit? This should have happened long, long ago.
