High-ranking Rays official sends Yankees a different message than you'd expect after AL East clinch

The Tampa Bay Rays are the American League East division champions and the New York Yankees are not. The Rays clinched the division at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night in thesecond game of a doubleheader. And following the Rays' 6-1 victory in the nightcap, the champagne celebration began on their rival's turf.

However, you'd be surprised by the Rays' perspective following their clinch on the Yankees' home field. FanSided spoke with a high-ranking Rays official about whether clinching in their rival's home ballpark meant anything more significant.

"Really nothing beyond them having a really big clubhouse for a celebration that wasn’t cramped," the Rays person said. "We’re rivals but we don’t hold any disdain towards the Yankees."

"(We have) nothing but respect for the team, front office, and history. They challenge us yearly to be our very best."

Not only did clinching against their rivals at Yankee Stadium not mean much extra to the Rays, but they also would have preferred to do it at home in front of their own fans.

"We much rather it happened at home with our fans and more of our staff," the official added.

Luckily for the Rays, they now have a first-round bye along with home field advantage in both the ALDS and ALCS (if they make the latter).

Previewing a potential Yankees vs. Rays postseason matchup

The Rays are 52-46 against the Yankees in the regular season since 2020. Tampa Bay also beat the Yankees in the ALDS in 2020. The Rays are 7-4 versus the Yankees this year with two more head-to-head matchups remaining against each other.

If the playoff standings hold up from now until Sunday, the winner of the Yankees-Boston Red Sox Wild Card series will face the Rays in the ALDS. So with the way things are shaping up, there's a good chance that the Yankees and Rays could meet again in October.

As aforementioned, the Rays have had the Yankees' number in 2026 based on their season series record. A head-to-head postseason matchup should bring out the best level of competition in both teams across a five-game series. But unfortunately, Yankees superstar Aaron Judge's availability is in question after suffering a moderate calf strain, so New York likely won't be at full strength.

While the ALDS is expected to be an AL East rival matchup of Yankees/Red Sox against the Rays, it doesn't sound like it will be as heated as anticipated. That's because there's a certain level of respect between opponents. The Rays may have clinched the division in their rival's ballpark, but to them, it didn't mean anything more. We shall see if they meet up again next month in the playoffs.
