The New York Yankees suffered a devastating personnel loss at the tail end of their 11-5 victory in Seattle on Monday night, with Oswaldo Cabrera left sprawled out on the home plate dirt after a misstep that left his ankle twisted and disfigured. As it turns out, the rest of the baseball world was watching, too.

Cabrera, as affable as they come and an extremely versatile asset, now faces an arduous road to recovery, though the adoration he deserves is still very much in his future. He'll still get to ride with the Yankees every step of the way. He'll just be forced to do so from a different vantage point.

Fresh off dominating the Boston Red Sox, his ex-teammate and close friend Gleyber Torres was clearly as affected as the rest of us by Cabrera's plight. The two spent three years in pinstripes together, and Cabrera's dynamic 2022 debut — where he did everything from rob homers as a right fielder to hit 'em in Cleveland in October — was one of the main reasons that Torres' Yankees were able to stave off disaster and win the AL East.

Though he's now (less than mutually) parted ways from his former team, Torres still showed love to Cabrera, posting a heartfelt message — paired with a photo of the two of them together in pinstripes — on his Instagram story the morning after.

If it wasn't already clear to outsiders just what kind of person Cabrera is, the messages from his Yankees teammates (and former brothers in arms) probably sealed it. Before he was carted away in dire straits, the infielder even had the wherewithal to turn to Aaron Judge and confirm he'd scored on the sacrifice fly that left him indisposed. The will to win and be a good teammate simply refused to leave his eyes, even as his personal hopes were shattered.

Torres is hardly alone in wishing Cabrera well, as it seems that anyone across the MLB fraternity who's ever interacted with him is harboring a heavy heart on Tuesday. Unsurprisingly, though, the two shared an incredibly close infield bond that has transcended state lines and rivalries, and Monday's events are weighing on Torres a little more than most.
