Giancarlo Stanton likely out for season after saddest Yankees injury update you've ever heard

Just...how?

How will the New York Yankees ever manage to fit Cody Bellinger, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton back on the roster at the same time? How will they handle Spencer Jones' roster spot? If Stanton's running full speed, as he has been in recent videos, then how is he not already ready for a rehab assignment? Well ... Aaron Boone answered that for everyone on Saturday in a method you dreaded, but probably expected.

Yes, the rumors are true. For the third time this season, moderate full-speed running has done Stanton in. After an offseason where it came out that his problematic elbows occasionally prevented him from opening bags of chips, he left an April game in Houston after a jog between second and third and never returned.

It was hard to even tell, at first blush, how he could've suffered a calf strain from the activity we witnessed, but ... he did. Then, after working his way back towards the roster, he suffered a recurrence at a similar level, felled again and back to square one in a blink.

And now, after weeks of hearing his return was wedged between Bellinger's and Judge's and should come around the time of roster expansion, he's instead down a third time, having strained his other calf while running and falling.

Giancarlo Stanton no longer fits on Yankees' roster during sad injury rehab

The Yankees telegraphed their faith in Stanton when they brought in Luis Garcia Jr. at the trade deadline and started playing Ben Rice more regularly at DH. If they didn't believe he'd likely return, then why should their fans have bought in?

Stanton's downfall, betrayed by his body in myriad ways less than two years after he was a postseason titan, is extremely depressing. It's also quite possible it marks the end of his Yankees career, 44 home runs shy of 500 and 90 at-bats into his second-to-last season under contract. 2027 is the final year of his deal, followed by a 2028 team option. Next year will be lockout-infested, and Stanton - again, depressing but true - no longer seems capable of being a top-flite athlete.

The sooner fans accept it, the sooner the feeling of counting on Stanton will recede into archives.
