There's no chance the New York Yankees regret the trade they made for Jazz Chisholm Jr., who has largely been a very good player since coming over at the 2024 midsummer deadline. He recorded 1.5 WAR in 46 games last year and has already logged 0.8 in 22 games this year.
Did we mention he's signed through 2026, too? Yeah, the Yankees would make this deal all over again. They traded prospects Jared Serna (INF), Abrahan Ramirez (INF) and Agustin Ramirez (C) to the Miami Marlins to complete the deal. New York had little need for infielders given their surplus at the position.
Some might argue, however, that they could've used Ramirez, who boasted excellent power last season after rocketing through the farm system back in 2023. He would've been an excellent backup to Austin Wells — or at least the idea of that plan felt right.
In the end, the Yankees knew they had to give to get, and Ramirez was the centerpiece of the Chisholm trade. New York is fine at catcher with both Wells and JC Escarra. It's not a perfect situation, but it's not hurting them by any means, and they definitely don't have second thoughts about the move.
However, Ramirez made his MLB debut on Monday after getting the call from the Marlins, and his first impression showed why he was a coveted target.
Former Yankees top prospect Agustin Ramirez makes MLB debut with Marlins
Not only did Ramirez go 2-for-3 with a walk, recording both his first hit and extra-base hit of his career, but he was behind the plate for Max Meyer's gem. The right-hander twirled six scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds in the 6-3 victory and struck out a ridiculous 14 batters to lower his ERA to 2.10 on the season. That was his best outing of 2025 so far.
Ramirez got the call after (another former Yankee) Rob Brantly hit the injured list with a lat strain, so the time is now for the young slugger to make an impression and prevent the Marlins from looking back. Brantly's injury should keep him out a decent while, so Ramirez will have enough runway and consistent playing time to hopefully establish a role.
We've seen a lot of players exchange hands between the Marlins and Yankees, so it'd be nice to see a former Bomber finally succeed after years of underwhelming deals.
