Former Yankees fan favorite and broadcaster Cameron Maybin named in misconduct report

The pieces are falling into place.

It doesn't seem like very long ago that New York Yankees fans were left baffled by the departure of Cameron Maybin, a 2019 Yankee spark plug, from the broadcast booth at the end of the 2022 season. His tenure in Detroit ended similarly abruptly; Maybin was hired for Tigers broadcasts in 2023, but the team silently parted ways with him when the season concluded. After a bombshell report released Wednesday morning, the timeline of events is starting to make much more sense.

Brittany Ghiroli and Alex Andrejev of The Athletic published a series of damning allegations clustered together on Wednesday (subscription required) related to the unchecked "boys club" atmosphere that seems to have permeated the Detroit Tigers' organization.

Though somewhat easily lost in the shuffle, given the deluge of corroborated accusations against a wide swath of high-ranking Tigers employees under Chris Ilitch, the article also levied charges against Maybin, one of the "next man up" Yankees of 2019 who swiftly seemed to become one of the next voices up in the world of broadcasting upon his retirement.

According to Ghiroli and Andrejev, complaints against Maybin specifically first began in May 2023, involving a series of "late-night calls" and messages to female staffers. "Probably not the best idea we hang, I'm trying to stay married," he reportedly wrote to one employee.

Maybin, who's offered regular commentary on social media since leaving his post in Detroit under suspicious circumstances, bizarrely continued unabated in that effort on Wednesday night, commenting on the Tigers' second consecutive lopsided victory over the Yankees. If it doesn't seem like "long ago" since Maybin was a regular part of your baseball-watching life, that's because it wasn't; his trade deadline commentary served as one of the strongest endorsements of Ryan McMahon less than a month and a half ago.

He hasn't quite faded from the public eye since the end of 2023, but his future certainly seemed murkier. While his actions may feel like a needle in a haystack of horrid occurrences uncovered by Ghiroli and Andrejev, they will not be forgotten.
