Former Yankee Harrison Bader's contract drama with Giants is unbelievable

Harrison Bader was a frustrating figure for the New York Yankees. Brought in at a time when the club needed a more athletic presence, Bader was a 2022 trade deadline gamble by Brian Cashman, who hoped to catch lightning in a bottle. Instead of the power-speed combo and Gold Glove-caliber defense in center, what the Yankees got was a player who spent a lot of time on the IL and posted a .627 OPS in pinstripes. We will not forget his 2022 ALDS performance, but that's all he's got to his name as a Yankee.

That had New York sneakily placing Bader on waivers 13 months after he had been acquired, leading to a sad moment when a guy who, to his credit, always played with high energy and wanted to be a Yankee, was claimed by the Cincinnati Reds.

Since then, Bader has bounced around the league, spending time with the Mets, Twins, and Phillies. He took a resurgent 2025 campaign into free agency last winter and scored a two-year, $20.5 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.

Bader has managed just 30 games for the Giants as injuries have robbed him of much of his season. Sound familiar? He's hit just .170/.198/.358 on the year, and now, after his bizarre scooter accident, he won't be returning to the lineup anytime soon. If that sounds like a crazy way to end a season, you haven't seen anything yet.

Bader had been dealing with plantar fasciitis and was scheduled to see a specialist when he took his scooter out on the San Francisco streets. While he was out and about, he reportedly crashed his scooter into the back of a fire truck, which then proceeded to run over his injured foot.

Multiple witnesses said that Bader was in a popular nightlife district in San Francisco and had allegedly been intoxicated at the time of the accident. What's crazy is that he also did this in college and got suspended.

The team is investigating the incident that occurred around 2:00 a.m. and is suspending his pay until he's able to "resume performing services for the club."

The team used the words "violated his contract" in their description of the situation, and they don't expect him to return this season. That will cost Bader millions for the remainder of this season, plus the Giants could take aim at some or all of the $10 million he's owed next year.

When Bader is able to return to action is anyone's guess, and what, if any, additional consequences the Giants can level against him are unclear. For now, it's a wild story that's resulted in a lot of pain for both sides.
