Fans demanding Yankees fire Aaron Boone after Red Sox series have gone too far

If there’s one thing that Yankees fans don’t like, it’s losing to the Red Sox. And if there’s one thing they really don’t like, it’s losing to the Red Sox in embarrassing fashion.

Both of those things happened this weekend when the Yankees lost two out of three to the Red Sox after taking the opener. They lost their next two games on national television.

The end results were so tough, in fact, that Yankees fans were ready to leave Aaron Boone in New York ahead of the team’s flight to Kansas City ahead of Tuesday's three-game set.

The biggest gripe with Boone came with his bullpen usage on Sunday — a familiar theme throughout his tenure as Yankees manager.

The latest instance came around Carlos Rodón. After the Yankees took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on a DJ LeMahieu home run, Boone tried to get one more inning out of Rodón. It didn’t work, as he surrendered a go-ahead three-run home run to former Yankee Carlos Narváez.

“Up until then I thought he threw the ball in line with how he’s been (this year),” Boone said after the game.

But even if that’s the case, it seems like most of the Yankees fandom isn’t buying the excuse considering Rodón had issued a walk and hit a batter prior to Narváez’s home run. Rodón also has a penchant for completely melting down at the first sign of trouble sometimes.

That decision came a day after he elected to go to Ian Hamilton in a one-run game in one of the Yankees’ worst losses of the season. And it’s not like the rest of his decisions on Sunday worked out either.

He pulled Rodón in place for Fernando Cruz, who promptly loaded the bases before being pulled for Tim Hill, who allowed a two-run single to Jarren Duran.

Jonathan Loáisiga was able to hold the line in the seventh inning, but Boone tried to get too cute and send him out for a second inning, where he gave up back-to-back home runs to Abraham Toro and Trevor Story.

While the Yankees are in first place in the American League East (and got another big day from Aaron Judge), they’re 15th in MLB in bullpen ERA (3.83), which is incredibly fitting since it’s an average unit.

It’s been in shambles since the start of the year thanks to Devin Williams’ struggles, but now things are even worse thanks to Luke Weaver’s injury. Williams picked up the save on Friday, but it was the only time the bullpen was able to get the job done during the series against Boston.

But even with all of that, the hatred toward Boone's moves have gone a bit too far. While he makes some head-scratching moves, it's clear this current iteration of the Yankees bullpen isn't at the same level it's been at in year's prior.

The Yankees will now get a day off before they resume action. And, for most Yankees fans, it seems like they’re thinking about it as another chance for Boone to screw things up in the bullpen. Might be time to relax a bit, though.
