Every Yankees fan's biggest fear is materializing with this horrible 2026 stat

They have to start hitting at some point ... right?

The New York Yankees began the 2026 with an 8-2 record, and despite a mostly dormant Aaron Judge and slight concerns about the bottom of their lineup (and bullpen, per usual), fans were convinced that this might actually be the best team in the American League.

But suddenly, the Yanks have lost four in a row (and five of six), and their entire offense has gone completely frigid, to the sad and sorry degree that not even New York's stellar rotation is relevant. The Yankees managed just five runs total in a three-game series against the Athletics at home, a losing effort that featured New York tallying just two base hits over a 17-inning stretch.

The struggling Jazz Chisholm Jr. was benched (to the delight of fans) in the final game of the A's series, and he's since come out and admitted something he absolutely never should have said out loud (even though we all knew it to be true): Jazz hates playing in the cold, and he can't hit in lower temperatures. Bodes well for October, doesn't it?!

Yankees are simply one of the worst offenses in MLB right now

A week ago, it was easy to toss aside the Yankees' offensive "concerns" as nothing other than Jazz being built for summer and Ryan McMahon's bat being built for Double-A pitching. But now we're in a spot where the Yankees' collective effort as an offense is too awful to ignore. Pretty much everyone is accountable. At the moment, the Yankees have the third-worst team batting average in Major League Baseball (updated after Sunday's loss vs the Rays). They now sit at .202 with only the Mariners (.194) and White Sox (.192) worse.

McMahon and Chisholm have already taken a brunt of criticism above, but there are plenty of other Yankees whose numbers are weighing down the boat, or even outright poking holes in the bottom. Jose Caballero can't hit a beach ball right now (.146 average, .384 OPS), Austin Wells hasn't been able to hit for multiple seasons at this point (.154 average, .523 OPS thus far in 2026), and Trent Grisham's 2025 season looks like a fluke so far (.133 average, .528 OPS in '26).

Okay, I can't help but mention McMahon again: .114 batting average and .376 OPS through 42 plate appearances this season! What are we doing? Is it too early to be voicing these things? 15 games isn't nothing.

Aaron Boone needs to get into his bag and make some aggressive changes for Yankees

It might be time for Aaron Boone to engage in some drastic tinkering, if calling up Jasson Domínguez and his hot bat can even be called drastic. It's not like Randal Grichuk has been operating as an effective right-handed bat. Put some guys in the lineup who are raking; suspend the lefty-righty stuff for a second.

Nobody's advocating for "giving up" on any players. This is temporary. The Yankees just need a violent (if brief) shakeup in the lineup to escape from this rut. Pretty soon, the sun will be shining and Jazz will be comfortable again. Heck, maybe Anthony Volpe will surprise us all and be an offensive upgrade over Caballero upon his return. But for now, Boone should get a-tinkering.
