Perhaps the last time New York Yankees fans were positively amped about a top prospect starting pitcher's debut before Wednesday night was back in 2015 when Luis Severino got the call to the bigs. Like Sevy, Cam Schlittler delivered in his first action in front of the Yankee Stadium crowd against the Seattle Mariners.
The electric right-hander pitched into the sixth inning, lasting 5 1/3 frames and allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven, and one of those earned runs came thanks to Jonathan Loaisiga promptly surrendering a two-run homer after he was called upon to keep the game at bay.
That cut the Yankees' lead to two, but thankfully the Bombers responded with a three-spot to take a five-run lead and maintain a comfortable cushion. Schlittler earned his first MLB win in what was a 9-6 victory for New York.
The 24-year-old hit triple digits multiple times in this outing and dialed it up to 98 MPH for his final pitch of the night β his second strikeout of MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh.

Cam Schlittler's MLB debut evokes standing ovation from Yankees fans
But, even better, back in the second inning, the Amazon Prime broadcast cut to Schlittler's family in the crowd. They showed up in big way, and one of his younger cousins was holding up a sign that said "Holy Schlitt! That's our cousin!" Another sign read "Straight Outta Walpole", where Schlittler is from in Massachusetts.
These are the kind of folks you want backing you for your MLB debut with your team in desperate need of putting together a winning streak.

His mom was emotional after his first stroukeout and it was an all-around wholesome evening for the rookie, who earned a well-deserved promotion with the Yankees in need of a pitching spark. Schlittler delivered on the hype and has some momentum as a potential mainstay in the rotation for the remainder of the season.

In what was an overall trying day for the Yankees, who designated longtime veteran DJ LeMahieu for assignment after difficult conversations about his role with the team, Schlittler β and his family β lifted the spirits of the fanbase. Now, the Yankees will go for the sweep tomorrow as they look to capture four wins in a row and bury their recent forgettable stretch for good.
