Brian Cashman's wild word salad about Anthony Volpe has Yankees fans confused

Um, what now?

New York Yankees fans have been clamoring for an alternative to Anthony Volpe for quite some time. The anointed one has time and time again failed to live up to his promise. All the while, Brian Cashman has been staunch in his support of the former top prospect.

There was the epic rant in defense of Volpe from back in 2023. There was the "ebbs and flows" defense of his disappointing sophomore campaign in 2024. In 2025, it took a historically disastrous stretch, the likes of which hadn't been seen in 120 years, to earn him a brief benching, but while Jose Caballero slashed an epic .266/.372/.456 following his acquisition at the deadline, it was still Volpe who more often than not was given the nod at shortstop.

The culmination of three years of disappointment has led to fans wishing that competition would finally be brought in for the 24-year-old this offseason. And while that's still unlikely to happen, Brian Cashman's wild, mixed-up comments might indicate that there's going to be a shorter leash on the golden boy once he returns from shoulder surgery. Possibly. Definitely. Maybe?

Brian Cashman's strange mumbo jumbo might indicate the Yankees will have a shorter leash on Anthony Volpe in 2026

Cashman spoke on Volpe at the Winter Meetings, but if you expected clarity from the long-time general manager, you're definitely going to be disappointed.

“I have no idea where things can go,” Cashman said at the Winter Meetings on Wednesday. “The game separates it all, the men from the boys, (and) dictates who should and who shouldn’t be playing over the course of time from the roster that the manager has."

“People continue to earn their playing time or they don’t. In some cases, if you don’t have alternatives, somebody stays in that lane continuing to play unless you import something else. But if it’s competition off the guys on the club, may the best man win and keep it.”

The men from the boys? No alternatives? Import something else? Competition?

We're kind of all over the map here with mashed up cliches and GM double-speak.

Parsing through the subtext here, it sounds like the plan, as it stands now, is to let Jose Caballero get the lion's share of the reps at short while Volpe is on the mend, with Oswaldo Cabrera serving as his backup. Neither player seems guaranteed anything, however, and if one struggles while the other one is performing, the roles could switch. Solid logic so far.

But when Volpe returns? It sounds like maybe if Caballero is lighting the world on fire, he wouldn't immediately be sent to the bench, and instead, Volpe would have to earn his starting job back? Wishful thinking? Maybe. Of course, Caballero also owns a .657 career OPS, so it's not like we're guaranteed exceptional offensive performance out of him.

On the flip side, it does sound like Volpe could be given the opportunity to earn the starting job back, even if Caballero is playing well. He'd just need to play better when given the opportunity.

As for importing something else, what does that mean? Is Cashman considering other options for shortstop this winter? The free-agent market, aside from the defensively-challenged Bo Bichette, is ridiculously thin. Could he be speaking about a future move at the trade deadline if push comes to shove? Entirely possible.

All we know for sure is that Cashman uttered a lot of words, but was very light on actual answers. The bright side is, this might be the first time he hasn't blindly supported Volpe. Take that for what it's worth.
