The World Champion Milwaukee Brewers just polished off the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to near-universal approval across the baseball landscape. And ... five minutes later, manager Pat Murphy took a snipe at the Yankees, who've never been further from the Brewers on the "Fandom Joy Index".

This only made most of the nation - and self-loathing Yankee fans - love the Brew Crew more.

Bauers, playing a rock-solid first base all postseason long, despite middling-to-bad defensive metrics (heart of a champion), corralled the final out and presented his manager with the ball. Bauers will now be a free agent, and may be slapped with the qualifying offer, but will probably seek to cash in with a lucrative contract a few years after nearly retiring from the game, but remaining in baseball to help his wife retain medical insurance during pregnancy.

Of course, he was once a Yankee, and probably won't be again. Based on Murphy's message, it seems the two do not share a love of the Bronx Bombers' current roster and administration!

"You're gonna be a rich f***er," Murphy said while accepting the gift. "Just remember when you (are/were) on that horsesh*t Yankee team, all playing for yourselves ... just remember."

The worst account you know is going to tell Murphy and Bauers they can't joke like this because the Yankees are very successful, actually. These folks are in baseball and they're laughing at them, but the account that's outside of baseball definitely has a better handle on the situation.

Explaining Pat Murphy, Jake Bauers roasting the Yankees after winning World Series with the Brewers

This either means that:

  1. Bauers and Murphy regularly joke about how me-first the Yankees are and have been under Aaron Boone, giggling about the comparison between them and the current Brewers.
  2. This is the first time Murphy and Bauers have mocked the Yankees, but it was so front of mind for Murphy and easy to conjure that it was the first thing in his head after winning a title.

This is either the most familiar joke in the world to these two guys (and the rest of baseball?), or the Yankees are such a stand-in for selfishness that no further explanation was needed.

Now, was Murphy talking about Bauers' 2023 Yankees team, and asking him to recall how bad that clubhouse was? Or is he asking him to remember the Brewers' camaraderie and way of life after he signs with a team with worse chemistry, like the Yankees, in free agency? Is it "Remember when you were.." or "Remember when you're..."? Neither version is fantastic!

Bauers' response - "You're not getting rid of me that easily!" - seems to indicate he thought this was predictive, not retrospective. Meaning the current league-wide view of the Yankees is they're some kind of uncontrollable morass of me-first baseball, led in perpetuity by Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry about Bauers returning and his message falling on deaf ears in an increasingly stale clubhouse. The Brewers aren't getting rid of him that easily. And that's why they're the champions. They have a locker room nobody wants to leave. The Yankees? That's a different story.
