Looking for a "right-handed catcher," Brian Cashman? Well, the Brewers just snagged the man who might be the best one on the market for $1.75 million. His name is Gary Sánchez, and Yankees fans might be familiar with his work.
There's a reason we argued recently that signing Paul Goldschmidt and his near-1.000 OPS against left-handers was a better idea for the bench than cramming in a poor positional fit just to say you accomplished your narrow goal. Sánchez isn't the cream of the crop defensively, but he might've had the best bat of any remaining righty behind the dish — and that bat posted a .578 OPS against left-handers in limited duty last year (and a 100 OPS+ overall).
Sánchez isn't the bat he once was — and that "once was" harkens back to when he left the Yankees, not just his short-lived prime. The timeline of the move is even more frustrating than the move itself.
For reasons unbeknownst to anyone outside Milwaukee, the Brewers made high-floor third baseman Caleb Durbin available this week, a winning player who was in Boston by the time you and I blinked on the Monday morning after the Super Bowl. Durbin reported to Sox camp this week and noted that he used to model his game after Dustin Pedroia. Of course he did. And he was supposed to be our Dustin Pedroia ... before we traded him for Devin Williams, watched him flourish in Milwaukee, then watched them drop him to our chief rivals, emptying out their entire third base depth chart in the process. Thanks for that.
With Durbin, Anthony Seigler, and Andruw Monasterio now off the roster, the Brewers desperately need a third baseman. Surely, their follow-up move to the blockbuster trade that should burn addressed that need? Nope. Sánchez. Unless they have a hilarious conversion in mind, it's salt in the wound. Either way, you have to laugh.

Former New York Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez fills Caleb Durbin's Brewers roster spot after Red Sox trade
Or is it Seigler's spot? Another former Yankee, who was once blocked in the system by Sánchez! Clear path for him in Boston now. Funny how that works.
A solid 80% of the Red Sox's moves this offseason seemed specifically geared towards making the Yankees look stupid — and even the ones that didn't involved a PR-coached introductory press conference underscored by an inflammatory anti-Yankees quote. Durbin punching the Monster will sting. But at least the Brewers replaced his offense with Gary. That'll help.
