Bold Luis Garcia Jr. prediction doesn't seem so crazy now after Yankees insider's insight

Well, well, well.

When the New York Yankees added Luis Garcia Jr. at the 2026 trade deadline, they did so in an effort to add thump to a sagging lineup. By any means necessary.

The cost wasn't prohibitive - a pack of relievers and pitchers from the Yankees' deep system. The swing was perfectly tailored for the Bronx, and provided some fun jolts down the stretch. The positional fit ... was wonky from the start, seemingly predicated on the idea that Aaron Judge would never need DH reps and Giancarlo Stanton would never be returning.

The Yankees certainly aren't in a position to shoo away bats in 2027, but if you can find a way to trade Garcia to fill an additional position of need ... you can't be afraid to do so. Ben Rice will remain a Yankees centerpiece, and should plan to get comfortable at first base this offseason. Judge will be back, but how much longer can he be a full-time right fielder? Stanton is still under contract, and the awkward conversation there may dominate the offseason, but he's a Yankee for now. What about a right-handed, sure-handed first baseman like Paul Goldschmidt? The Yankees seem to like those, too.

For all those reasons and more, Yankees insider Joel Sherman sounded the alarm this week on the team potentially dangling Garcia Jr. in trade this offseason, potentially for bullpen help.

It's not crazy. It was never crazy. It's just roster math. That's why I was on it, perplexed, last week.

Luis Garcia is with the Yankees for a good time, not a long time - and his watch may have already ended

This Sherman discussion makes one thing seem absolutely certain: if Garcia sticks around, the Yankees view him as a 2027 rental, not a long-term piece. He can still change that by becoming more versatile/stable defensively at a position that isn't first base, but the Yankees are (rightly) committed to Rice and have no interest in a long-term first base/DH logjam, especially with Judge transitioning to DH sooner than later (or requiring added DH reps for freshness, at the very least).

Trading Garcia Jr. for bullpen help, after you traded bullpen help to acquire him, would feel a little lopsided. But what about a slugging third baseman like Isaac Paredes, on the way out in Houston? Is there a way to add Christian Walker, a right-handed first baseman, to that deal? The Diamondbacks purportedly pushed for Garcia Jr. at the deadline - maybe Garcia + prospects equals Ketel Marte?

This isn't a call to sacrifice Garcia Jr. - he's a fun ballplayer who will likely have to expand his defensive horizons to stay in the Bronx, dabbling at second and third base this spring. But if the opportunity arises, the Yankees can't be shy to make another area stronger by clearing up a logjam of their own making that's coming to roost next year (if everyone stays healthy).
