The Houston Astros swiped New York Yankees Triple-A pitching coach Spencer Medick this week. According to The Athletic, Medick was hired to be the Astros' director of pitching for the organization, which is a player development role.
The Astros are hiring Spencer Medick as their new director of pitching, sources tell @TheAthletic. Medick, a former Driveline employee, worked in the New York Yankees system for the past four years. He spent last season as their Triple-A pitching coach.

It's safe to say that the Astros are stoked to bring Medick on board given his track record with the Yankees and Driveline Baseball. FanSided spoke with one Astros source who shed some light on what their organization is getting in Medick.
What the Yankees are losing in Spencer Medick
"(We're) excited to have him," the Astros source said of Medick. "Coming from (a) strong pitching program in New York, (he has a) strong ability to integrate technology into coaching principles. Experienced working with variety of coaching backgrounds. Should be a great add."
"(He) started his career at Driveline and the Yankees do a good job resourcing their minor league coaches with full encompassing technology feedback loops," the source continued. "Force production, motion capture, video, ball flight and then coaching skill is digesting all that info in real time and being able to communicate adjustments to players without them having to understand or pay attention to any of it."
That is a strong endorsement of Medick, who spent the last four seasons in the Yankees' organization. Before joining the Yankees, he was with Driveline Baseball, the highly regarded data-driven baseball player development organization. Driveline is known for using data and technology to improve player performance. The Yankees are losing someone with an extensive coaching, data and analytical background in Medick.
Medick also deserves some level of credit for helping develop AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler in the minor leagues, given the ace's quick rise the last two years. Will Warren and Brent Headrick have also developed into solid arms as well.
Under Medick last season, the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had the fourth-best ERA and strikeout rate per nine innings in the International League. Now, he will be leading the Astros' organizational philosophy when it comes to pitching. Medick will not be an on-field coach, but rather will oversee pitching development across the entire organization, including the major league team and all of the minor league affiliates.
The Yankees have a very strong pitching program and led Major League Baseball with a 3.24 ERA as a staff in 2026. Meanwhile, the Astros were ranked 24th in MLB with a 4.58 ERA as a unit. If the Astros can improve their pitching with Medick at the helm, they could close the gap between them and the Yankees next season and beyond in the American League.
