Don't get us wrong. We love the offseason. We LOVE the hot stove. We LIVE for the Winter Meetings. But man, sometimes everybody gets too carried away, and New York Yankees fans are among the biggest culprits.
Following Michael Kay peddling a possible trade for Fernando Tatis Jr., the online Yankees community has collectively lost their mind. You cannot search "Yankees" without seeing countless Tatis Jr. highlights with the caption being "We need him in New York right now!"
First of all, no you don't! You're only saying that because a trusted Yankees source made the suggestion. Otherwise, this would've never even been a possibility because, to our knowlege, the Padres are not tearing down their operation.
Yes, it would be nice to have one of the most talented players in the Bronx on a market-friendly long-term contract to address the lack of star power on this roster, but let's not forget this very same rumor made its rounds back in 2022 (ahead of the 2023 campaign).
Though the situation was different with Tatis Jr. missing the entire 2022 season due to a PED suspension, the most trusted Yankees insider, Jack Curry, shot down that year's speculation emphatically, which suggests there probably isn't much merit to it three years later.

Yankees-Fernando Tatis Jr. trade buzz very much feels unfounded, and fans are making it worse
The Padres trading Juan Soto to the Yankees was a different story, in case anybody is drawing the parallel of these two teams being familiar business partner on blockbuster deals. Soto had one year of control left and his presence in San Diego clearly was not a fit.
Tatis Jr. is signed for nine more years and, once upon a time, was viewed as the face of the franchise. In fact, he might still be. And for an organization hoping to remain relevant on a budget or sorts, parting with a 26-year-old who makes an AAV of just $24 million would be an irresponsible decision.
Who says no? Padres dump $600 million in contracts to facilitate the sale of the team. They buyout McMahon and Stanton.

But forget that aspect of it. Think about New York. Think about how the Yankees do business. Is this really an ideal trade candidate for Brian Cashman's front office? You know, the same people who try to avoid any and every controversy, especially after what they (hopefully) learned from the Aroldis Chapman debacle?
Tatis Jr. is incredibly talented and is still relevant in the MVP discussion, but he has a controversial past with his PED suspension and clubhouse behavior (remember when Manny Machado almost fought him for getting ejected during a crucial game down the stretch a few years ago?). And not that we wouldn't welcome it, but his trash talk with rival fans hardly ever bodes well. Just imagine him going after Boston fans, only for the Yankees to get swept and lose by a combined 12 runs. This is not "Yankees energy" ... maybe once upon a time it was, but that culture was killed long ago.
So save yourself a few social media posts. There's no need to keep blowing this one out of proportion. Kay did us a favor by stoking some interesting flames, but we can assure you this one will die in its tracks soon enough.
