Anthony Volpe's latest quote proves Yankee fans' hostility might've helped him

He seems to be taking all the vitriol in stride.

As a New York Yankees fan, there hasn't been a more frustrating player in recent years than Anthony Volpe. The former top prospect was a product (and, like many others, a victim) of the Yankees' hype machine. Through three seasons, he's not only failed to live up to that hype, but has even regressed.

It doesn't help matters that the Yankees passed on signing a member of the most star-studded free-agent shortstop class ever back in 2021-22, instead bringing in Isiah Kiner-Falefa to serve as a placeholder for Volpe's arrival. For that, he'll always be looked at through the lens of what could have been.

Some of the criticism has been warranted. Volpe has at times reached unfathomable depths of ineptitude, like authoring the worst 33-plate appearance stretch in 120 years last season. Other times, the issues have been more nuanced. His defensive regression in 2025 was alarming, but along with some of his offensive woes could likely be explained once it was revealed that he was playing through a severely torn labrum.

His past performance has always made it hard to give him the benefit of the doubt, but one has to tip their cap to him for how he's handled the constant criticism. Many players would lash out at the fans and the media after a certain point. Not Volpe.

Anthony Volpe's latest comments show he's heard the criticism from Yankees fans and is using it to fuel himself

If there's one thing that always comes up when someone in the organization speaks about the 24-year-old, it's that he's a good kid. He's a hard worker who shows up with the right attitude every day, even if he's become talk radio's favorite punching bag and many fans' least favorite player.

He's not struggling because he hasn't put the work in. And that's something. It might not make you feel better about the prospect of him taking over the starting shortstop duties once he comes off the IL, but you have to give that to him. His recent comments exemplify that quality.

"The chip I have on my shoulder has been there for my whole life, my whole career. I just can't wait to go back out there and play and feel good and perform and help the team win, because at the end of the day, if I do that and I play the way I know I can play, everything will take care of itself," Volpe said.

"And I appreciate everything. I appreciate the accountability. I appreciate everything that comes with being the shortstop for the New York Yankees, so I wouldn't trade it for the world," he added.

Two big takeaways. One, it sounds like his confidence is still intact. With a young player going through a consistent slog, losing faith in their abilities is the biggest pitfall to watch out for. It doesn't sound like that's happened here. Re-embracing that chip on his shoulder could be the motivation he needs.

Second, you have to love the use of the word "accountability." It's nice to see that he's heard the outrage and agrees that something needs to change.

That starts with how he's been rehabbing, and will continue once he gets a clean bill of health and can begin a rehab assignment. From there, we'll see how it goes once he's back on the field. If you buy into his words, it will be better.

In our hearts, we hope that's true. In our minds, we're still skeptical, but there is a sliver of hope to grab onto.
