Sure, let's keep playing him through a serious injury.

Anthony Volpe's nightmare 2025 season has brought out the worst in New York Yankees fans. And it's not the kid's fault. He's just trying to play baseball. It's Brian Cashman's and Aaron Boone's fault for continuing to play him every day despite the troubling results (for three years running).

The truth is, Volpe probably doesn't possess the star power the Yankees envisioned when he was a top prospect. And that's OK. But he also wasn't supposed to be unplayable.

There are many factors that contribute to that. Volpe's hitting mechanics, lack of a consistent approach at the plate, his underwhelming arm strength, and questionable defensive instincts all play a role.

But what might have made 2025 all the more worse was the fact he suffered a left shoulder injury earlier this season and he never got any rest. He got one game off. Boone has consistently asserted that the ailment probably isn't directly linked to his struggles, but that's hard to believe.

And after news dropped on Thursday that Volpe received a cortisone injection in the affected area, now everybody is really wary. Can the Yankees look any more irresponsible when it comes to the handling of their young shortstop?

Yankees look even more irresponsible after Anthony Volpe injury update

Per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Volpe received the shot on Wednesday, which further explains his absence from the lineup in favor of Jose Caballero (who made a number of impressive defensive plays and got a hit, while Volpe has continued to make errors and is 9 for his last 72).

This is more evidence that supports the concerns of all fans. Everybody questioned why Volpe only received one day off after how concerning that injury looked. Even if it wasn't necessarily "serious" or structural, why wouldn't there be any precaution to rest him multiple days? It's not like he's Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton and needs to be in the lineup every game.

That's the confusion with the Yankees, though. They treat Volpe as if he's Judge or Stanton. Despite heinous slumps and clear signs that he needed a breather, Volpe has been thrown into the fire every single day since 2023. He played in 159 games that year, and after the season Boone admitted there was some wear and tear because Volpe had never logged that many games before in a single season. Their follow-up plan? Play Volpe in 160 games the following year as his offense regressed. Across 145 games this year, Volpe has appeared in 141 despite both his offense and defense crumbling (the latter of which has been a shocker because of how good he was in 2023-2024).

The latest injury news is just more of an indication of the Yankees' malpractice on this front, which is why, at this point, the "boos" whenever Volpe makes a bad play aren't directed at him — they're for the people in charge.
