The New York Yankees just lost one of their most important clubhouse presences. Oswaldo Cabrera was taken off the field in an ambulance on Monday night in Seattle after suffering an apparent leg injury on a play at the plate.

In the top of the ninth inning, Cabrera ripped a single up the middle, which gave everybody in the starting lineup a hit as the offense rolled against the Mariners. Oswald Peraza was then hit by a pitch and Trent Grisham singled to load the bases. Aaron Judge was up next.

The Yankees captain hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and Cabrera tagged up from third base. The incoming throw was on line, but took catcher Cal Raleigh off the plate and a little bit up the third base line. Cabrera had to avoid the tag, and he did just that. He scored to make it 11-5, but as he got out of the way and positioned himself to touch home plate, he rolled over his left ankle, and ... well, you can see for yourself.

Cabrera went down in a heap and immediately called for help. Both teams' training staffs rushed to the field and signaled for more help. Originally, a cart was brought out to home plate, but then it was determined an ambulance was needed.

Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera suffers likely season-ending injury on scary play

This came after an injury scare for Judge earlier in the game, so Yankees fans weren't in a good place. Cabrera has been such a key piece for this 2025 team due to his availability and steady defense. Not to mention, he's a fan favorite and burst of energy.

It's unclear when the Yankees will have further updates, but we can assume more will be revealed on Tuesday morning considering the injury happened so late in the game.

Jorbit Vivas took over for Cabrera at third base after he exited, but DJ LeMahieu is nearing a return. Aaron Boone said the veteran will be activated off the IL on Tuesday and start on Wednesday in the series finale vs the M's. At the very least, that's good timing since the Yankees are dealing with an uncomfortable amount of injuries thus far.

But that's hardly front of mind for anybody right now. The Yankees were clearly in bad spirits on the field when this occurred, and fans rushed to social media to wish Cabrera well as the scene unfolded on the live broadcast. It was a horrible moment for somebody who absolutely didn't deserve it.
