New York Yankees offseason news, rumors, 2023 payroll, and more
After another disappointing finish in 2022, the New York Yankees will be heading back to the drawing board in fairly disheartening fashion. Aaron Judge is a free agent. Anthony Rizzo is opting out of his contract. Even with those guys in the fold, general manager Brian Cashman has a ton of other moves to make to improve this roster.
The offense needs to be upgraded even if Judge returns. The outfield depth is also a concern with or without him. The pitching staff needs help in all areas. A third baseman and shortstop are needed. Perhaps a second baseman, too, depending upon Gleyber Torres’ status. Throw in Rizzo’s opt out and we could be looking at an entirely new infield come Opening Day.
If the Yankees restrict their spending, they’ll be in big, big trouble, as we’ll be relying on Cashman’s mix-and-match trades to help the franchise remain under the $260 million luxury tax threshold.
For what feels like the millionth year in a row, fans have no idea what’s in store this offseason. Will it feature detrimental losses? Will the status quo largely remain? Will the Yankees blow past the luxury tax, go for it all, and surprise everybody?
There’s so much to answer, but for now we’re in the information gathering stage. Here at Yanks Go Yard, we’re going to keep a tracker of all the news, rumors and transactions fans need to know for the remainder of the offseason.
