Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton drills laser HR after heckler calls him overrated
Thursday night’s Yankees game in Chicago feels like one of those classic “Drunk Games” early, and not just because of Luis Gil’s hanging sliders and some back-and-forth offense.
Yes, a heckler has captured the microphone in the early innings. In other words, someone who should definitely be watching what he’s saying has no idea everyone can hear what he’s saying. Everyone including Giancarlo Stanton.
When Stanton stepped to the dish in the first inning against White Sox co-ace Dylan Cease, he was the Yankees’ last hope for cashing in DJ LeMahieu’s leadoff double.
In case that wasn’t motivation enough, though, a hot mic near the field/booth caught a 42-year-old from Winnetka booming in his loudest possible voice about how “OVERRATED” Stanton really is.
Stanton? Overrated? In this economy?
Don’t worry. Gone-carlo gave the fan, and everyone else in the yard, a two-run piece of his mind.
Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton home run drills homer to respond to Chicago heckler
Well, that’ll teach him!
What’s that? It won’t? He doesn’t even know where he is right now, let alone that his voice is amplified? Got it.
Stanton’s homer set the tone early for the Bombers, but the loudmouth White Sox struck back in the second with three runs off Gil, the young spot starter who’s struggled at Triple-A in the early going.
His fastball? Electric. Unfortunately, the kid’s telegraphing the slider like he’s wasted and yelling into a microphone about what’s coming.
You can’t worry about hecklers like this guy until their insults start to get more specific and eerie. If you hear one scream out, “Hey, JUDGE! Seven years and $255 million from the San Francisco Giants is in your future!” then you can get nervous.
For now, it’s just a fun little quirk in a stadium full of people who hate Stanton — including the over-55 crowd in his own fan base, even though this is already his sixth dinger of the season that’s tied a ballgame or given the Yankees the lead.
Oh … scratch that, he just hit a SEVENTH.
Overrated. Some people…
