It wasn’t quite the “Savages in the Box” moment, but perhaps fans are getting a taste of the old Aaron Boone in 2022. On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees manager was ejected for arguing balls and strikes late in the game and made sure to say his peace before hitting the showers.

Too often the last two seasons fans have been stuck with the boring, matter-of-fact version of Boone, and it wasn’t exactly his fault. He constantly had to answer for his players simply not getting the job done, which was something he had no useful insight for.

That paved the way for excruciating postgame interviews and a general lack of fire. The dugout was sort of lifeless, or at least it felt that way. The Yankees were nowhere close to the 2018 and 2019 days when Boone was making decisions without being under a microscope and letting loose on umpires left and right.

Some might’ve forgotten the Yankees skipper underwent heart surgery during spring training last season, which more than likely affected him in some significant way. Heart surgery! Out of nowhere! Though it was for a well-known condition he suffers from, it was still shocking and concerning because of the manner in which it was announced.

But so far this year it’s been a different story. Boone seems reinvigorated and out for blood after what transpired when falling far short of expectations in three of the last four years.

In case you needed to be sold a bit more on Boone’s return to “savage” status, you can thank Jomboy for providing the proof in the pudding. This close-up, NSFW video of Boone losing his mind on the home plate umpire on Wednesday night was the stuff of legends.

Aaron Boone losing his mind on the umpires was awesome for the Yankees

Jomboy is either the best lip-reader who’s ever stepped face on the planet, or he gets the raw audio via hot mics and then does the narrating himself. Either way, his work on this front is the best in the business.

Remember how the 2019 Savages in the Box video galvanized the fan base in a way we haven’t felt … since then? This Boonie clip won’t exactly do that, but it’ll go a long way in relaying to the fans that their manager is backing his guys with ferocity each and every night.

You’ve noticed a difference elsewhere, too. Boone isn’t seemingly “punting” games like he was last year. He’s going with what works, and if this team is in relative striking distance, he’s not backing down (at least in the early going).

The players love it, too. Both Aaron Judge and Josh Donaldson spoke about it in the postgame and said they appreciate the fight in Boone and that he’s willing to back his players when he knows it’s appropriate.

Some “f—ing adjustment,” huh guys?
