Here it is. The Rivalry in October once again. The New York Yankees were so close to hosting the AL Wild Card Game in the Bronx, but they couldn’t get the series win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Instead, they settled for that playoff berth, but will ship up to Boston to face the hated Red Sox to determine who will go to the ALDS.

The slate of Game 162s did not disappoint on Sunday. The Yankees walked it off against the Rays in dramatic fashion. The Sox erased a four-run deficit against the Nationals and took the lead in the ninth to turn their fortunes around. Chaos was averted with a double or triple tie-breaker, but the Yanks still have to go on the road to determine if their season will be extended.

They finished off the year fairly hot, though, getting the job done in their final nine games and sweeping the Sox just over a week ago to put the pressure on Boston with just six games left. It was their first sweep of their division rivals on the road since 2015.

Now, it all comes down to one game, which will conclude another chapter in the rivalry. The overachieving Sox vs the underachieving Yanks. Here’s the betting preview for Tuesday night’s game.

Yankees Pitcher Today

Gerrit Cole (16-8, 3.23 ERA) and Nathan Eovaldi (11-9, 3.75 ERA) will face off again, just like they did 11 days ago at Fenway Park in what was a nightmare for the Red Sox. The Yankees destroyed Eovaldi to the tune of seven earned runs in the first three innings. It was the right-hander’s worst start of the season by far and eventually led to a Yankees sweep. He redeemed himself with six shutout innings against the Orioles, though.

Cole, on the other hand, got that win against the Red Sox as he labored through six innings with his only blemish being a three-run homer off the bat of Rafael Devers, but then he got tattooed against the Blue Jays in Toronto to snap the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak. His final four starts to end the year featured a 6.35 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Really not encouraging … but there’s nobody else you’d rather have out there for you in a do-or-die game. If Cole can slow it down, pitch at his own pace and locate his spots, he should be fine. And he could get lucky with JD Martinez being questionable for the game after suffering an ankle injury on Sunday.

Yankees vs Red Sox Prediction Today

This one’s all about feel. That’s what playoff baseball is all about. The analysis can only go so far. One swing of the bat, one defensive gaffe, one wrong pitch can change everything. Who do you trust more? Cole or Eovaldi? The Yankees offense or the Sox offense? New York’s bullpen or Boston’s bullpen?

The way these two teams ended the year was night and day. The Sox nearly choked away their season after getting swept by the Yankees and then losing two of three to the Orioles, while the Yankees went 6-3 against three 90-win teams to nearly grab home-field advantage. Though the Bombers’ offense went silent against Tampa, they always do that. This game should offer a reset, which we feel will benefit the Yankees.

Cole is a better big-game pitcher. The Yankees offense is deeper and has better star sluggers. It won’t be easy, but New York should escape here with a 5-3 victory when all is said and done.
