The last time these two teams faced off, the Yankees were in dire straits, forced to head on the road to … Buffalo to try to fend off the hot-swinging Blue Jays.

Yes, that’s how long ago New York’s road sweep of this squad really was.

Remember that series? It was one of the many “moments” this year that was supposed to “turn the Yankees’ season around,” only for the season to petulantly decide not to turn around.

Then, blessedly, came the 13-game winning streak in late August that vaulted the Bombers all the way to the front of the Wild Card picture, as God intended. And then, since you know how this team works, came the 2-6 stretch that muddied the playoff race yet again. Can’t win ’em all. Even against the Orioles. Light me absolutely on fire.

On Labor Day Monday at the stadium, the Yanks will begin an all-important four-game set with Toronto that takes place in their friendly home confines. That didn’t much help against the O’s, now, though did it?

In early August, we pinpointed three series that would determine New York’s playoff fate. First came the Oakland road series, which turned into a split. This is No. 2, and it had better be a cleaning of the slate after Keegan Akin and the O’s had their way with a team (and a bullpen) in decline.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Odds Today

If you want to bet on the Yankees today, you’d better … really believe in them, as our friends at WynnBET have them as -140 favorites on the money line to shake off their losing ways and beat the Jays’ big 2020 free agent addition. Toronto sits at +115 (bet $100 to win $115).

On the run line, the Yankees are +145 to cover a -1.5-run spread, while the Jays are -175 favorites to either win outright or lose by a single run. The over/under is set at 9.5, with the over checking in at -115 and the under at -105.

Yankees Pitcher Today

Jameson Taillon (8-5, 4.44 ERA) will take to the mound to dislodge himself from his end-of-season wall. In recent weeks, the July Pitcher of the Month has looked a little … different, running out of steam after two or three excellent innings, Corey Kluber-style. Things aren’t as bright as they were in early Aug., and New York’s dried-out bullpen could really use a rebound.

He’ll be opposed by Hyun-Jin Ryu, who entered the season as Toronto’s ace, but has been bypassed by Robbie Ray and sports a 3.92 ERA that he’d probably like to lower. Ryu struggles historically against the Bombers, though, adding to a potential powder keg on Monday.

Yankees Starting Lineup

Gio Urshela’s back! Luke Voit…is not. Gleyber Torres…is still manning short. Alright.

Yankees vs Blue Jays Prediction Today

There’s no reason to trust New York’s bullpen, especially not after Sunday’s game, where Andrew Heaney came in to choke away a 7-4 lead against Baltimore, then Chad Green was utilized for two innings in a lost cause, rendering him likely unavailable Monday. Clay Holmes will be there. Aroldis Chapman will be there. Both starting pitchers are entering unfavorable situations, leading to a scenario that … probably looks a lot like Sunday afternoon, yet again. 9-6 Blue Jays, as the Yankees refuse to hold on.
