The New York Yankees won an absurd 13 consecutive games to leap right back in the thick of the playoff race, but their magical ride came to an end against an Oakland Athletics team looking to avoid falling out of the hunt themselves.

With Nestor Cortes on the mound in Oakland against a very competitive team, the 3-2 defeat shouldn’t set off too many alarm bells, as the A’s are one of the better teams in the American League.

Still, the Yankees need to put that loss behind them and try to get back on the winning track, and they’ve got one of their best pitchers on the mound today in order to help them achieve that goal.

With most of the big home-run hitters ready to do some damage against a beatable A’s pitching staff, the Yankees have all the necessary ingredients for a victory on Sunday Night Baseball.

The over/under for Sunday is set at 9.0, with the over getting -115 odds and the under coming in at -105.

Yankees Pitcher Today

The Yankees will start Jordan Montgomery and his 3.69 ERA against Oakland today. The tall lefty has been on a tear lately, as the Yankees have won four of his last five starts while he himself posted a 1.78 ERA in that span. Montgomery gave up one run in five innings against the Braves his last time out.

The A’s will counter with Paul Blackburn, who has bounced between Triple-A and the major leagues with Oakland for parts of five seasons. He has a 4.09 ERA in two starts with the Athletics this season.

Yankees vs Athletics Prediction Today

The Yankees shouldn’t expect to waltz into Oakland and dominate the A’s given the fact that they are a viable playoff team, but Bob Melvin isn’t exactly starting Catfish Hunter today. If the Yankees can get out to an early lead and count on Montgomery to pitch deep into the game, they should be able to wrap up a win in a tidy fashion.
