Though we weren’t expecting the New York Yankees to sweep the Seattle Mariners in their four-game set over the weekend, it still was disappointing they couldn’t get the job done after given a sterling opportunity to do so.
But we’ll take three out of four, right? The Yankees have now improved to 61-50 and sit 2.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox and 6.5 behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the AL East. It’s not ideal, but the Bombers are playing with at least some conviction, which gives us hope for the next seven weeks or so.
Now a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium awaits them … and yet another series in which the Yankees don’t know who will be starting at least one of the games!
With Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery still out, it’s unclear who will pitch on Wednesday, but we’ll worry about that when we get there. Right now, the focus is on Monday and kicking off the week with a win. Let’s take a look at the betting preview for Aug. 9!
What Time is the Yankees Game Today?
The Yankees and Royals will play at 8:10 PM EST in Kansas City to kick off the three-game set.
What Channel is the Yankees Game on Today?
The Yankees are airing locally on YES Network, and on Bally Sports Kansas City if you’re cheering on the Royals.
Yankees vs Royals Odds Today
According to WynnBet, the Yankees, once again, are heavy favorites for what feels like the 11th day in a row. On the moneyline, New York is -180 to win the game (bet $180 to win $100) while Kansas City is +150 (bet $100 to win $150). If that price is too high for you, perhaps looking at the run line could be of interest. The Yankees are -1.5 there — meaning they have to win the game by two or more runs — at -115 (bet $115 to win $100) and the Royals are +1.5 at -105 (bet $105 to win $100).
The run total for this one is set at 10.5. If you think this will be a high-scoring affair that will feature 11 or more runs, take a stab at the over (+100, bet $100 to win $100). If you prefer the under, that’ll cost -125 (bet $125 to win $100).

Yankees Pitcher Today
Jameson Taillon (7-4, 4.04 ERA) takes the bump for the Yankees and he’ll be going up against Carlos Hernandez (3-1, 4.58 ERA). In Taillon’s last eight trips to the mound, the Yankees have won seven of those games, with the only loss being the unforgivable blown contest against the Houston Astros before the break. That stretch for Taillon actually began with a sterling outing against KC, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks across 6.1 innings. He’s lowered his ERA by over a full run since June 24.
As for Hernandez, this will be his 22nd MLB game and just eighth career start. He’s got good stuff, but there’s no reason the Yankees shouldn’t be able to get after him early and provide Taillon with some run support.
Yankees Starting Lineup
Andrew Velazquez is IN THERE! And Rougned Odor…is also out after banging a ball off his foot on Sunday. The hits just keep coming.
Yankees vs Royals Prediction Today
The Yankees are suffering right now because of countless COVID absences, but this team always performs better when they’re not at full strength (can someone please explain that?). Plus, Jameson Taillon’s current run of form has kept the Bombers in just about every game he’s seen since the beginning of July. The Royals sold off a bit at the trade deadline … but have been particularly good since the All-Star break, sticking it to the Brewers, Tigers and White Sox.
Still, the urgency for the Yankees to deliver is much more prominent and they need to get ahead before they take on the White Sox later this week. Let’s go with a 6-2 Bombers’ win.

Yankees: 1 disappointment to demote, 1 prospect to promote down the stretch
The New York Yankees have some roster wiggle room, and need to promote this prospect while demoting their most disappointing piece.
