What a way to kick off a four-game set! On Thursday night, the New York Yankees used a clutch three-run homer off the bat of Joey Gallo to take a 5-3 lead in the seventh inning and rode it to victory after it appeared as if the Seattle Mariners would best them in the opener.
Nestor Cortes wasn’t exactly at his best and Chad Green didn’t help matters by allowing the Mariners to break the tie in the sixth with a Jarred Kelenic solo homer, but the offense came alive when it needed to and Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman shut the door despite making it extremely difficult.
The Yankees are now 10 games over .500 for the first time all season and are gaining ground in the AL East race, sitting just 5.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays and four behind the Boston Red Sox.
Can New York stay the course with Tampa visiting Baltimore and Boston heading to Toronto? Let’s take a look at the betting preview for Friday’s contest between the Yankees and Mariners.

Yankees vs Mariners Odds Today
According to our friends at WynnBET, the Yankees are favorites yet again, sitting -180 on the moneyline (bet $180 to win $100) while the M’s are +150 (bet $150 to win $100). Seattle, however, is the favorite on the run line. They’re +1.5 at -130 (bet $130 to win $100) and the Yankees are -1.5 at +104 (bet $100 to win $104).
It seems the bookies think this one will be a high-scoring affair with the run total sitting at 10.5. The over is -105 (bet $105 to win $100) and the under is -120 (bet $120 to win $100). Perhaps that’s because of the pitching matchup…
Yankees Pitcher Today
The Bombers are sending Wandy Peralta (1-1, 5.19 ERA) to the mound (yikes) given all their issues with COVID at the moment. Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery remain out due to the team’s third outbreak and Peralta, in fitting fashion, will start his first career game after his 15-day layoff on the COVID list.
The left-hander has not been good this year by any measure and he’ll be pitching in his first game since … July 8. This will be his third game since June 18. Really not good.
Seattle will call on fellow lefty Marco Gonzales (3-5, 5.15 ERA) to the bump. He’s been rock solid since the All-Star break after missing a lot of time with a forearm strain. In his last three starts, he’s allowed just five earned runs across 16.2 innings. The Mariners are 2-1 in those games, with the only loss coming due to a bullpen meltdown against the Rangers.

Yankees vs Mariners Prediction Today
We hate to be downers, but the Mariners are a good team (they’re currently going toe-to-toe with the Yankees in the Wild Card race) and we really doubt they’ll fall victim to a bullpen game that might not feature the Bombers’ best relievers.
After all, they nearly won last night. An epic two-out rally turned the tides. But the Yankees won’t be that lucky all series long, and the rest of this series will be a battle. Look for the M’s to even things up on Friday night by a mark of 7-4.
